Recently we attended East Ayton Village Hall to deliver a talk on excavations we carried out on Racecourse Road in 2024. Among the discoveries were six human inhumations, a post-built palisaded enclosure, a post-built roundhouse, multiple enclosures and ditches, and lots of pottery and flint tools.

After a well-deserved rest, the JAM team and their volunteers returned to the site in May this year to re-open last year’s trench and continue their investigations, which has included a trench extension. The finds have continued thick and fast in true JAM style...

The plan was to target and evaluate selected features with the most archaeological potential and the data ended up showing several earlier phases to the fort which lie outside of the scheduled area, as well as possible entrances and a road.

We were excited to join them a few weeks ago, where we volunteered to help carry out high-resolution LiDAR scans across the entire field west of the Roman fort, along with geophysical magnetometer and ground penetrating radar survey.

...at a burial site likely associated with a small farming settlement in the area. In all, nine cremation burials were found in the centre of a ring ditch and thanks to radiocarbon dating we were able to determine they dated to c.1915 -1620 BC, placing the site in the early Bronze Age.

The Minister for Roads and Buses, Simon Lightwood MP, was in attendance to formally open the road, and he was joined by the Mayor of Melton Mowbray, leader of Leicestershire County Council, the town’s MP, councillors and others. The media were also very engaged and recorded the event.
