That's a great set of ideas, a must read for anyone starting. I think I would still do a PhD if I had to start today. I'm as excited to discover new stuff (and make cool new things) as I was when I started. Perhaps even more so now because of the complexity of what can be achieved.

Students sometimes ask me if it still makes sense, in this accelerating age, to pursue a PhD in AI. Perhaps counterintuitively, I think it's a great time to do so. I wrote up some thoughts on this here: web.mit.edu/phillipi/www...

We had X NeurIPS 2026 submissions and Y of them passed, X-Y were rejected. The actual counts are irrelevant, as every Y was appreciated and each and every X-Y hurt. These were the last ones where coding was done 100% by humans 💪. Also writing btw, but we continue to do all our writing ourselves.

Drag'n drop figures for illustrating 1-NN. This would take so long without an LLM, I would not do it. I'm like a kid in a candy store with these interactive figures. I like interactive demos soooo much.

So, things appear to have to become much worse than killing 123 school girls (!) before people understand that LLMs are toy computer programs and not to be relied on for anything of any importance.

Curious how many people actually submit more than 20 papers, so I explored #ICLR2026 data (took at 30 mins w codex). 101 people had over 20 submissions (max 54), contributing 2226 papers (11.2% of 19,814 submissions). Capping them would block at least 500 papers (2.5% total).

The "rebuttal" button and "official comment" button will both be treated equivalently - the difference in terminology between the two is to facilitate discussion during the discussion period on OpenReview. This also means you are allowed to post several comments, with a total of over 10000 words.

This year there is a change in the #NeurIPS peer review process: ACs need to write **preliminary** meta reviews before the rebuttal period and those will be released with the reviews to authors. Failure to do so will prevent the ACs (and their co-authors) to see their own papers. 1/2

We all like to play offended, but what if it's the same trend in real jobs? Either we have to agree that the role of high ed is not to learn how to do a job, or we have to agree that AI is a capability boon that is to transform jobs. It is not a xor btw, at least one of these propositions is true.
