“This can only happen once Canada becomes unshackled from the economic reasons it remains tethered to its perpetuation of the oppression of Indigenous peoples.” -from Ellen Gabriel’s “By Any Means Necessary Canada 150—No Reason To Celebrate as an Onkwehón:we Peoples” in Surviving Canada (2017)
“Settlers whose eyes have opened up to the not-so-invisible class system of the Americas have now joined those who have remained dedicated to the teachings of our ancestors, who desire to leave a legacy for future generations in caring for the land and the environment. Ours is a system that sadly continues to oppress us all, Indigenous and settler alike. Like a film covering our eyes, the government propaganda machine continues to place emphasis on jobs, energy… and a "strong" (read: white) economy, and unless you can get on the "let's make money bandwagon," then you are an enemy of the state, and
deserving to be poor and disenfranchised.
While I realize that 2017 marks Canadas 150 anniversary, and that some Indigenous peoples will join in the celebration, I think of how little has changed in our realities. The Canadian government still controls every part of our lives, our history is still not being told in an honest manner, and Indigenous peoples are still being criminalized for insisting on justice. As Indigenous peoples, we have not even been allowed to grieve properly for all the losses we have experienced. I await the day when I will witness Canadians…actually accepting responsibility for the harms colonization has caused Indigenous peoples, beyond the many harms of the Indian Residential Schools system. All of it. Canadians must understand the impact on us of the loss of our languages, our hardships in trying to rebuild our nations traditional governance, cultures, lands, and resources. Fear, greed, and a heartless disregard for the family units of Indigenous peoples have brought us to the point where I don't think our ancestors would recognize who we are today or the land they so lovingly used. This is what Canadians must come to understand-not just with their heads, but also with their hearts.
This can only happen once Canada becomes unshackled from the economic reasons it remains tethered to its perpetuation of the oppression of Indigenous peoples.”
