With @birdlifeeurope.bsky.social @natuurpunt.bsky.social @natagora.bsky.social in front of the EU institutions. Wake up governments. What competitiveness are they talking about? Fires, droughts, heatwaves, storms are bad for the economy (even if you don't care about nature and people...)

This is a huge step forward in solving an environmental problem we should have solved decades ago. But the fight to get rid of lead poisoning is not over as this ban does not cover bullets which poison scavengers like vultures, and people consuming big game.

WE WON. Lead in gunshot will finally be banned across the EU! Just now, the European Parliament approved in plenary the Commission's proposal to restrict lead in gunshot. This decision ends years of debate on one of Europe's most persistent forms of lead pollution.

The assault on EU regulations is not about "simplification". It's about a handful of polluting legacy industries and laggard companies trying to kill the emerging clean alternatives. From pesticides, diesel cars, gas boilers to PFAS coolers, it's not env vs economy but rent seekers vs innovators.

Not that we had any doubts, but here are the smoking guns. Farmers will be poisoned under the banner of "defending farmers". And those pulling the strings are very visible.

Meanwhile the farm lobby has successfully lobbied for: More fossil fuel based fertiliser More methane emissions More diesel subsidies Easier destruction of wetlands Harder transition to resources saving &healthier plant based diets. "Food security" is weaponised to destroy our actual food security.

A target to reduce N use. Which can be done by supporting shift to more plant based diets, cutting food waste, incentivising crop rotation with legumes, better management of manure, etc. Some ideas got killed before making it into the Farm2Fork strategy. The rest got killed later.

Ariel Brunner @arielbrunner.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
We are misusing and wasting nitrogen in Europe on a grand scale, which is why so much of it ends up in our water instead of our food. You can also greatly reduce the need through use of N-fixing legumes in crop rotation. Finally, more healthier plant based diets would require a lot less nitrogen.

Ariel Brunner @arielbrunner.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
During the green deal, the farm lobby killed the attempt to reduce farmers dependence on nitrogen fertiliser. Now the EU just spent 540 milion €, in one go, on extra fertiliser subsidies. This is money taken from taxpayers and handed to Russian and Gulf regimes.

The EU livestock strategy is an example of magical thinking replacing science based reasoning. Yes, we should recycle manure, support extensive grazing of biodiversity grasslands, make better use of waste, etc. None of it will avoid need to reduce meat&dairy consumption Numbers just don't add up.

The EU depends on imported #fertiliser, as shown again by the war in Iran. But manure—suggested by some as solution—cannot replace mineral fertiliser because the #livestock sector itself is a net consumer of it. Scaling up #manure “production” would increase fertiliser use: doi.org/10.1111/1746... +
Figure 2: Balance of nitrogen (N) flows from mineral fertiliser into animal production and from manure out of it (EU27, 2017/18). An illustrated bar chart shows that 5.1 million tonnes of N from mineral fertiliser are used to produce animal feed, but only 2.5 million tonnes of N from manure are provided to the rest of agriculture -- meaning animal production is a net consumer of 2.6 million tonnes of N from mineral fertiliser.
