1964 - Dionne Warwick - Walk On By A Bacharach/David composition, filmed live at The 27 Club in Knokke, Belgium, on New Year's Eve 1964, so in a sense we're not moving far from 1963.

CGS recently released Map Sheet 48, a statewide shaking-intensity map based on USGS's 2023 National Seismic Hazard Model. Here's what it shows. #earthquake 1/3
Map of California titled 'Earthquake Shaking Potential,' published by the California Geological Survey. The state is shaded using the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, ranging from pale yellow (VI, Strong Shaking) through orange and red to dark maroon (XI, Devastating Shaking), showing the level of ground shaking expected from future earthquakes.
The darkest red and maroon areas run along the coastal mountain ranges and major fault zones, most intensely through the Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside corridor and across the San Francisco Bay Area. The Central Valley, including the Sacramento area, along with parts of the northern Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe, appear in lighter yellow and pale orange tones, indicating comparatively lower but still present shaking potential. A legend on the right explains the six intensity levels shown, and the map includes a Drop, Cover, and Hold On safety graphic in the lower left.

1/11 🐟 2nd new preprint today from @chasedbrownstein.bsky.social We investigated how losing the swim bladder, the organ that most fishes use to control their buoyancy, has shaped the diversity of ray-finned fishes over 90 million years of Earth history. The results surprised us. 🧵

May US transit data is in today, & all of the 10 largest US rail networks are growing! SF is seeing a real boom, with ridership up 16% on Muni & 13% on BART SEPTA (Philly, 8.7%) and PATH (NY/NJ, +6%) are also seeing strong growth, while MTS (San Diego, +0.6%) is the slowest🧵

I hear the frustration of staff going beyond the will of electeds, but the professionalized committee staff is so SO important to making sure that what gets out of committee will actually work in statute. (And even then we constantly need clarifying legislation lol)

RIP John Seymour. He visited my classroom in 5th grade and talked about being a Senator to help Californians. Made an impression on me and I asked a LOT of questions. He gave me a high five and a keychain that I kept even as legislative staff across the aisle. www.ocregister.com/2026/04/21/j...

Big applause for your writing of the villains. It’s hard to make a reader feel so much anger and disdain for a hive without names (as opposed to one strong antagonist) but you did it so well! They were so dangerous and horrifying yet also so absurd. And memorable.

Fantastic tight 3 act structure. I haven’t read a book in a bit that was so disciplined in this and it felt refreshing. Or like, as unmoored and unfairly thrown away from purpose as the characters seemed to feel, kept the plot itself moving along well. Sorry if this doesn’t make a ton of sense?

Finished the book. Just wonderful. The right book to read at the right time. I loved every character. Jada’s loneliness stood out so sadly for me, and I truly loved the switch from the moment she really truly lost every *thing* but also in that hit-bottom moment she gained and accepted her friends.
