People spend loads on #UTI preventions that aren’t truly effective, like D-mannose. £19.99 only buys you a 2-week course. The rest of the products on display were similarly expensive and unlikely to do much. We need better therapies! (See Alt text for source of negative D-mannose RCT) #UTISky
A packet of D-mannose being advertised in Boots for recurrent UTI, 14 sachets for £19.99. Best part of £40 a month. The conclusions from an abstract from a recent RCT (Hayward et al. 2024, doi: 10.1001/jamainternmed.2024.0264)

“Conclusions and relevance: In this randomized clinical trial, daily d-mannose did not reduce the proportion of women with recurrent UTI in primary care who experienced a subsequent clinically suspected UTI. d-Mannose should not be recommended for prophylaxis in this patient group.

Trial registration: isrctn.org Identifier: ISRCTN13283516.”

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli proliferate as a coccoid morphotype inside human host cells
Although typically rod-shaped, uropathogenic E. coli divide and proliferate as round coccoid cells during intracellular infection. This study shows that accelerated division via FtsZ constriction driv...

Why is preterm birth risk doubled with maternal UTI? It depends on the immune response. We found distinct immune signatures in a UTI-associated preterm birth mouse model. In a human cohort from @AShea_Lab, urine cytokine levels could predict preterm birth. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
