Maybe my beef is actually with copyright laws. Make film and TV copyright last 10 years, not the 100-odd it currently is. Then I can get good, legit versions of these things.

It seems there are a few editions of it on dvd. The Shotgun Edition (that I just ordered) seems to be the directors cut one, but without dvdcompare working it's harder to definitively confirm. But hey, any edition is likely still good fun.

Honestly in this era of digital media it's pretty wild that something pretty well known and liked can just stop being available. Resorting to scratched up old DVDs (or turning to the high-seas) shouldn't really be the only choices.

Ideally I'd want the bluray version, but as it's OOP and not even on streaming (or even VOD / rental) that means the BR sells for about £20. I'll just get the old DVD and wait for a 4K (that has been in the works for almost 4 years, apparently, so who knows if that'll ever see the light of day).

Dvdcompare site is down, apparently for a few days too. This means I'm going to just have to take a punt that the version of Lock Stock I'm buying is actually a decent version. Could end up wasting 6 quid! That's almost 3 quarters of a pint of Guinness in London.

I think she gets how stop motion works so it'll be less of a mystery to her. But King Kong is still pretty impressive even knowing about stop motion.

Great shout, although it'll probably terrify her so I might have to wait a few years.

We did Star Wars already, but she was younger then. And we've done Raiders of the Lost Ark too. And Jurassic Park (although that does use CG, of course). We have been meaning to watch Mary Poppins, so maybe that'll be a good option.

One thing my daughter said during this was 'how'd they even make effects like this before CG?' which got me thinking what pre-CG movies I could show her as good examples that are actually suitable for an 11yo. So, no Alien or Thing. And not stuff like Blade Runner or 2001 as she'll just be bored.

She just thought it was a bit weird and has odd effects. Which is true, I guess. The only people in it she recognised were Danny DeVito (because of Matilda) and Michael J Fox (because bttf - but even then she needed prompting to see if she recognised him). Anyway, it's still a 5* film for me.

Just such an unbelievably stacked cast. And two Jack Nicholson's, because one is never enough. Has any movie ever has a cast this impressive before or since? I've no idea how they managed it, tbh.

That's cool because I always thought that the unparalleled world building that Star Wars created, covering hundreds of planets, species and galaxies really needs reigning in so that it can only focus on one dude and his relatives for 12 movies.
