Letter from ‘A.B.’ to John Richards at Beaumaris mentions the controversy over the punishment of the chief leaders of the Jacobite Rebellion, and the romantic escape of Lord Nithsdale. BHILL/6785 1716
“Lord Nithsdale was to have suffered on Friday last made his escape over night in a Riding Hood which his Lady brought in on purpose. So now we call a woman’s riding hood a Nithsdale”This letter refers to William Maxwell, 5th Earl of Nithsdale, a Scottish Catholic who took part in the Jacobite rising of 1715. He was captured and sent to London, tried and found guilty of treason and sentenced to death in the Tower of London. On hearing of his arrest, his wife Winifred travelled to London and hatched a cunning plan to rescue him. The night before he was to be executed, she was admitted with two of her maids into his room. he exchanged clothes with one of the maids and managed to make good his escape fleeing to France.Mae'r llythyr hwn yn cyfeirio at William Maxwell, 5ed Iarll Nithsdale, uchelwr Catholig o'r Alban a gymerodd ran yng ngwrthryfel y Jacobitiaid ym 1715. Cafodd ei ddal a'i anfon i Lundain lle cafodd ei roi ar brawf a'i gael yn euog o fradwriaeth a'i ddedfrydu i farwolaeth yn Nhŵr Llundain. Ar ôl clywed am ei arestio, teithiodd ei wraig Winifred i Lundain a llunio cynllun cyfrwys i'w achub. Y noson cyn iddo gael ei ddienyddio, cafodd hi a dwy o'i morynion ganiatâd i'w weld yn ei ystafell, yno, cyfnewidiodd ddillad ag un o'r morynion a llwyddodd i ddianc a ffoi i Ffrainc.
