As is traditional, white people should mark Columbus Day by getting lost looking for the spice section of the supermarket, wind up in the Hispanic foods section, and claim they found the ramen.

Basically I have to maintain a “professional tone” on department socials so I’m the opposite here.

Getting limbered up for #AskAnArchivist day on Wednesday. Remember: there are no silly questions. There are sometimes silly answers, depending on how well I’ve slept.

Fuck it. I am going to start referring to AI as trump intelligence. Lies confidently, steals everything, toxic to the world, no critical thinking/understanding, worst people are the biggest cheerleaders, relies on the exploitation of underpaid workers while actively trying to deny their existence,

Mysteries of Udolpho was great fun, plus saccharine early Romantic poetry shoved in at spots. No giant items of any kind that I recall though.

Last month I had an alien truther on the phone, telling me where to go to see “darting lights” in the night sky that clearly aren’t human made. Today it was someone who firmly believed our voicemail is recorded on a cassette and didn’t know library catalogs exist.

Why do the bonkers calls always come in when nobody is around to witness me losing my grip on reality? If I have to deal with this nonsense it could at least provide amusement for someone else.

These AI-generated reference inquiries are making me hate large chunks of my job and I resent them for that, on top of everything else. It’s such LAZINESS at every level. We are not here to do your research for you. We are here to facilitate you doing your own damn work.

I continue to be puzzled by actual scholars who find our contact info and ask basic questions that are clearly answered on the website. Why wouldn’t you check before asking?

Sobering, insightful essay on how chatbots mangle historical primary sources. 🗃 www.hnn.us/article/ai-i...

AI Is an Anti-Primary Source Machine
Real voices from the past are threatened by chatbots designed to amplify — and ultimately become — the loudest voices in the room.

I saw you look at the door sign that says OPEN in big bold letters. You don’t then need to poke your head tentatively into the reading room and ask if it’s ok to enter. Open sign, unlocked door, lights on, staffed desk. All good clues.

Today's Extremely Specific Problem: call numbers that don't distinguish between editions of a book. 🤨 All copies cataloged for 1899 edition, but copy 2 is actually 1914. C’monnnnn

Whoever last worked on this handbook used double spaces between sentences and the platform doesn’t recognize that for find-and-replace. So I have to find them individually. Woe is me.
