I've been learning GPR the last few days. It's going good to get some pretty heavy use on my thesis site.

As a "young" (time in the field not age) archaeologist, I gave my first guest lecture today on using Small Uncrewed Aircraft System (sUAS) in Archaeology. It was fun. I am still not super confident giving presentations though. I guess at some point I will work through that.

I finished the first draft of my thesis proposal, I think. Finished making plates for 80 lithics from three sites. Also moved cold adverse plants inside. Made a grocery store run, and did dishes.

My uncle was also in college during the Vietnam War. He was also deferred. For the uneducated folks to go after anyone who were deferred because of college is ridiculous. It was common, and will likely be the next time the draft is implemented.

Movie sets. Material objects to portray fictitious worlds in a digital form to the public. The monumental sets made for film remain as tourist sites. What messages continue for the public long after the images disappear from the screen? #archaeology #pseudoarchaeology #heritage #historicpreservation

1. My thesis project, the "Old LSU Site", aka the original LSU campus. 2. The archaeology of institutional life. I guess more specifically, the archaeology of early American higher education.

The university has approved a field school for the site, the first since 2018 and the only one in the state next summer. Needless to say we will be doing excavations there and I plan on finishing up my thesis the spring of 2026. Sorry for the long winded intro.

While I specialize in digital arch, my thesis is on the Original LSU campus in Pineville, LA. The site was the home of the Louisiana Seminary of Learning and Military Academy. It opened in 1860 with William Tecumseh Sherman as the president. It closed in Oct 1869 when it burned to the ground.

I specialized in digital archaeology, using GIS, photogrammetry and sUAS (drone) technology for analysis in archaeology.

Fast forward to 2020 and my youngest graduated from high school, so we moved back to Louisiana and we started back to school, me and her. In 2024 I graduated with my BA in Anthropology from LSU and started the MA program this semester.

This is a program that uses archaeology to rehabilitate wounded military members before they are discharged from the military. This is the first I had heard of using archaeology to aid in mental wellbeing. Since then I have seen a lot more published on the subject.

From 2012 to 2016 I was afforded the opportunity to live in the UK. This is where my interest in Archaeology took off. While we were there I ran across an episode of Time Team that featured @richardosgood.bsky.social and Operation Nightingale.

In 1999 I joined the Air Force, doing all kinds of fun stuff. While it was a lot of hard work and sometime long hours, I got to see things and have experiences I wouldn't have been able to otherwise. I was medically retired in 2019.

Hey all, I guess it's customary to do an introduction post. So here's mine. My name is Conan and I am working on my MA in Anthropology at Louisiana State University. Before I decided to go back to school to get my BA, I had a previous life doing something completely different.

I too deal with an autoimmune disease, Crohn's disease. While it is mostly under control, if I stray too far away from my standard diet things can get real interesting real fast.

This also gave some students an opportunity to get a little experience excavating for the first time. They all did very well. It also gave me a chance to brush up on some teaching skills that I haven't had to use in a while.

The site buts up against a bayou that empties into Lake Pontchartrain, providing ample resources the people that were here. We had lots of fauna remains from this unit, to include fish, turtle, and deer.

A new pottery type has been identified from the site, more to come on that later I'm sure. More importantly it can help answer questions about the immigration of the Pensacola people into eastern Louisiana.

When the State Archaeologist asks for help, I have to answer. This is my second time on this site excavating test units. This is a very interesting site that is a 1300-1600 CE shell midden but there is likely an earlier, probably CE 0-500 occupation of the terrace as well.
