This is how fascism is normalized.
The image is a screenshot from the website ‘The Cut’. It has a neck-up photo of Natalie Harp, a blonde fascist who is part of the Trump administration and is actively destroying democracy in the United States. The image is accompanied by text about how she does her eyeliner, because we live in a hellscape.

Feel free to use this chance to #AskAnArchaeologist about video games and how we work with digital media! (Below is a tiny bit of my current thought exercise game on community and archaeological ownership.)
The image shows a split screen. On one side is the technical ‘code’ for a game. On the other side is the output, which is all text.

I’m…having trouble keeping up with new followers. If you follow me, we’ve met in person, and I don’t follow you back right away, let me know! The signal-to-noise is overwhelming. As an apology, here is a picture of my puppy wearing a Santa hat. He is also overwhelmed.
A white and brown border collie puppy rests under a Christmas tree. His nose is very pink. He is wearing a red Santa hat.

And this was the shield upon which the deceased was laid, within the chariot.
A bronze shield has a center boss and intricate detailing.

This was the chariot burial we talked about.
A large trench has been dug out of brown dirt. Two skeletonized horses stand upright, attached to a partially buried chariot.

Are you in Oregon? Do you like art? My former student Han has a show starting and is giving a talk this weekend. Han was in my first cohort of students when I first started teaching, and I adore them. Please show your support in person if you can!

Proving once again that Yorkshire is the most beautiful place to live. This is all naked eye visible.

My workout routine is lifting and carrying a 50 lb Aussie/Border Collie up a flight of steep wooden stairs multiple times a day. Extra workout points when she decides halfway up to thrash about. (I would die for her, and might, the way she wriggles.)
A white to merle dog with one brown eye and one blue and brown eye looks up at the camera. The dog is a Border Collie - Australian Shepherd cross. She is the most beautiful girl in the world.

Back from Egypt. Still unemployed.
Two archaeologists stand in front of an Egyptian temple wall. They are facing away from the viewer. The male archaeologist, on the right, is pointing upward at something out of view. The female archaeologist, on the left, is unemployed.

Today’s hot takes brought to you by waiting for a plumber in an empty, radiator-less house in the cold north of England.
A red-haired woman in glasses makes a face to indicate she is cold and unhappy.

Here’s @inklestudios.bsky.social saying the quiet part about museums out loud… 🏺
A painting of men and women walking under umbrellas in Paris sits above a caption that reads, “All these paintings must be stolen.” It is a screenshot from a videogame.

We just started year 4 of our Wildemount campaign. I love our little idiots. Art by the amazing @amasugiru.bsky.social, who is also our VERY patient DM.
Black and white line art shows a group of adventurers. There is a tortle, a halfling, two elves, and a half-orc.

Day 1 of 2024 was redeemed by a visit to the Devil’s Arrows and St John the Baptist Church, Kirk Hammerton. (We covered our theological bases…) The stones were awe-inspiring, and the church hit the sweet spot - Saxon tower and Art Nouveau heading into Arts and Crafts frescoes.
Three standing stones are aligned in a field and wood.Frescos of female saints cover the walls of a chapel.

I like to be the last one up on Christmas. I sit in the dark and quiet with the tree and listen to the small sounds of my family asleep nearby. I think about the day, and about those we’ve lost who used to spend this day with us. I let myself feel the full measure of how much I miss and love them.
A lit Christmas tree glows with colored lights in a high-ceilinged dark room.

Timeline joy, these are my dogs in little coats on the beach. We all got sandy and sea-sprayed and it was fantastic. Also, I found an ammonite (not pictured).
A woman stares out at the sea. Two dogs, one in a green coat and one in a purple coat, stare at the photographer. The sea is unmoved. The sea persists.

Today in, “Weird Things I Found Online While Attempting to Restore a House” is this door knocker. Yes, that is the entry to King’s Manor, which houses the Department of Archaeology 🏺 at the University of York.

I’ve been meeting my ArchWriMo 🏺word counts the last few days (1000 words a day across three articles), but it’s a struggle.
The target word count for a paper is listed as at 1521 of 5000. The session word count for a paper is listed as at 71 of 131. Next to this is a paper outline.

Whomp-whomp.
An eight-pack of Diet Coke sits on a messy desk next to a keyboard. One Coke is open, showing the author’s failure of willpower in the face of writing deadlines.

Oof, professional norms and behaviors. You just put out the Bat-Signal for me.
Batman looks at the sky. The Bat-Signal is a giant light. Superimposed over it is the word ethics, in all caps.

I’m much more of a sea witch than a harvest witch, but still, these are my children, my little babies, my autumn kiddos, my perfect pumpkins, my good gourds, my sweet squashes, and I love them.
Several pumpkins and gourds of different colors are in the back of a car.

I’m still struggling through a cold, but I’m excited to have this to read while I rest !
A book titled, “The Game Narrative Toolbox, Second Edition” sits on a bed. The authors of the book are Tobias Heussner, Toiya Kristen Finley (PhD), Jennifer Brandes Hepler, and Ann Lemay.

I literally just had the worst taco I’ve ever had in my life. I…can’t even explain all the ways it was bad. I will give you this pictorial example, however. This is what they said was “guacamole”. Reader, it is not. It is a cup of lime-scented, avocado-colored, piss-water sauce.

We’re looking at canine cranial cruciate ligament surgery #3. But your dog only has two CLs, Meghan! What can I say, my boy is gifted. (As in, he has gifted me with another multi-thousand pound bill.) Check out those expensive legs!

The image in my profile is The Great Hall, a wallpaper designed by Dan Funderburgh and available at Flavor Paper. It’s based on the Met’s collections. I like to play, “How many of these pieces are looted,” with it. It narrowly lost out being installed in my new office.

I am a supportive colleague, work well under pressure and with tight deadlines, don’t cross picket lines, and always stand my round at the pub, even when I’m not drinking. Hire me!
A black and white woodcut shows a woman with her arms spread wide. Around her is text that says, “No wage slavery. Socialism means brotherhood. Freedom. Equal opportunity. No people can be free while dependent for their bread.”

10 minutes on here and I’m talking about tacos and the rampant inequalities in the heritage sector. I missed you all so much. Just to make it even more like home, here are my dogs.
Two dogs are in a field of grass and yellow flowers. One is standing. One is lying down.

Begin as you mean to go on, I suppose. So… Is your labor valued? Is your time valued? Are your rights protected? Are you unionized?
A red banner is stretched across the front of a pub. It reads, “Rise up, join a trade union.”
