#HillfortsWednesday High up on the mighty Ysgyryd fawr/Skirrid ridge hillfort yesterday with @archaedelle.bsky.social & Kate Churchill 🤩 The long ridge-top hillfort has remnants of surviving gateway stonework & commands unparalleled views across the hills & valleys of Monmouthshire 📷 My own

Had a lovely day visiting sites in Monmouthshire with @drtobydriver.bsky.social and @churchillarch.bsky.social Our 1st stop was prompted by an interesting artefact reported to PAS Cymru, and the 2nd was Ysgyryd Fawr to check out the Iron Age earthworks still visible along the trail 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #archaeology
Selfie with me to the left wearing a black PAS Cymru fleece and ball cap, Toby to the right wearing a red Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales hoodie. We are smiling in front of a murky pool. Photo of the hillfort from a higher vantage point on a stone outcrop, looking down the slope with Toby and Katie to the left. Rolling green hills and cloudy skies in the background. Photo of sun beams through the clouds illuminating the town of Abergavenny in the distance.

How did prehistoric cultures perceive remarkable natural stones in the landscape? I came across this incredible perched glacial erratic nr Cregennan Lakes yesterday in upland Gwynedd which closely resembles some regional Neolithic tombs 🧐 One for #TombTuesday 📷 My own

Fur mostly but some mane/tail hair could be useful too. But primarily body hair/fur - the finer the fibres the better

I like doing it this way because citizen science is fun, working with pony owners means they can consent directly, and vets are busy as it is without having to liaise between me and pony owners to gather details, but thanks!

There are some hair fibres in a Late Iron Age (c. 1st century BC-early 1st century AD) copper alloy artefact. The corroding metal created an antimicrobial environment and kind of concreted the hairs onto it 🥹

It definitely makes the hairs longer and the Shetland I looked after that had Cushing’s had a distinctly wiry overcoat which, according to his owner, he hadn’t had prior to the Cushing’s - all anecdotal of course, so I’m looking forward to measuring some actual specimens!!

I used to care for a very ornery Shetland pony with Cushing’s, including attempting to shave his overgrown fur in the summertime…he remained furry and I would just hose him down as a compromise 😅😂

I too have spent a lot of time covered in a thick layer of horse sweat and fur lol I grew up with horses and had them until my heart horse passed away 4 years ago. I was thinking foals will have different diameter hairs than adults, and conditions like Cushings will also impact the hair

I do indeed, I grew up with horses in a very seasonal place (Kentucky, USA) - my boy was a furry beast every winter and sleek as anything come summer! ❤️

I haven’t, it’s only something we thought of today! I’ll definitely contact them thank you so much! We only need a small sample of undercoat to measure the diameters of the individual hairs!

An unusual request in the name of archaeological science: Would anyone happen to have a Shetland or Exmoor pony that wouldn’t mind sending some fur samples to me? We’re trying to compare a potentially preserved fur specimen but there’s (perhaps unsurprisingly) few sources on fur fibre diameters!

Is the figure based on a figurine or anything?? We had a little head terminal thingy that was in for recording yonks ago and we couldn’t find a parallel for circular eyes (they tend to be lenticular in the south, anyway), rectangular nose and straight grooved hair that looked like a bowl cut 🧐
