My impression is that there's still plenty of work to be done, but there isn't active opposition as there is in the UK, and day-to-day interactions seem to be pretty accepting. My trans friends' issues seem to be more around medical gatekeeping than anything else.

I growl about Irish Rail, but they don't claim that their vehicles are due when they don't exist. I've just seen a Dublin Bus go from "3 minutes" (which it held for 10) to "Due" to... nothing. The next one evaporated off the tracker before it showed up 8 minutes late, 2 stops into the route. Clowns.

Housekeeping or farming, bit of carpentry on the side. And that then seems to be true for as many generations as you care to go back.

Absolutely. And possibly start recycling her stuff if you still have it lying around, because you wouldn't want to leave that near kids.

Apparently the MetroLink project could run to €19 billion. Ok. GET ON WITH IT. It's not going to get any cheaper, and it's completely necessary, not least because it's embarrassing telling international visitors they can't get a train from the airport. www.irishtimes.com/transport/20...

Today's train, after a few weeks of single failures, fails on two counts - distant platform AND no booked seats displayed. We'll see about the on time bit.

One of the airport hotels in Helsinki is at the top of my current list. I'd travel just for it, to be honest. Someone should make a comparison list.

I'd pay for it, though. I don't have nightmares about dentists, but they're still my least favourite experience outside of times I thought I was going to die.

Today, a full two months later - and I take a train once a week on average - the Holy Trinity has been achieved. Train at nearby platform, booked seats displayed, and on time. We will likely not see its like again for a while.

I made one of these (depicted) a few years back, I should do so again. They're an autumn thing in my mind, though. Looking forward to seeing how yours goes!

Technically, yes. When I attended TCD for a while, lo these many years ago, the answer to "can I get this book published 20 years ago" was very frequently "no, the publisher hasn't given us a copy yet". So praxis may differ. And they wouldn't usually buy books they were supposed to get via deposit.

My memory for specific things that have happened is getting worse and worse. Having seen them on your list, I have a vague notion that I saw the Pumpkins live at some point, maybe in the Olympia? But I am at this point uncertain whether I dreamt that, or saw a recording.

As far as I can tell, I haven't actually learned that. I cheerfully click the link, and THEN have the "ew, no" reaction. But to be fair, I run into the ew-no sites a lot more when I'm trying to do my own research than when I'm clicking on links people have sent me.

No, I winced a bit when I saw it. But as with a lot of TV - as opposed to music and writing - there's a lot of other people's input into Father Ted, and as far as I can tell, there's none of his later bullshit in it. I appreciate RTÉ's effort, at the least.

For a start, I'd ask if women prefer to date men that earn more than them, or if men prefer to date women that earn less. Or if, indeed, this is a relevant consideration for Gen Z at all, since two of their incomes are mostly still not enough to live comfortably.

This is the correct way forward. The current situation is benefitting a small number of landlords, and nobody else. Of course, our glorious leaders are either landlords or have them in the close family, so it's going to take some pressure for this to happen. www.thejournal.ie/readme/kelly...

The deep trench could be a dipping trough; sheep dipping is one of the major elements of sheep-farming I remember from childhood. Usage of farming terms (and culinary, my actual area of study) can vary from one county to the next, though, let alone a continent away.

An enclosure for putting sheep in temporarily - overnight maybe, for lambing, or when you're about to run them through a dip, or the like. Would have been made of hazel and willow ("sally") hurdles up to early 20th century, then metal gate-like things later.
