@ventuskycom on X:
A powerful storm is expected across a large part of the Mediterranean Sea. ⚠️ At the beginning of next week, wind gusts over a wide area will exceed 110 km/h, generating huge waves with heights of more than 6 meters: ventusky.com/sea-map/signif… Such intense wave activity over such a large area is relatively rare in the Mediterranean. Significant damage can be expected along the coasts of the affected regions.

In March, in the middle of the bleaching period, our surveys of corals in the northern Ningaloo Reef lagoon showed up to 90% of the coral had bleached. In October we revisited the sites and found that between 52% and 71% of corals had died. theconversation.com/we-knew-ning...

They play a crucial role in cleaning surrounding water and sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere. Since seagrass health is directly linked to the health of the entire coastal ecosystem, by monitoring it, we can gain valuable insights into the status of our coastal waters.

A meadow on the left with the escarpment in evidence (from which 3 highlights start: rocky fish, archaeological artefacts, escarpment cavity) and a rocky substrate.
On the right the conclusions:
Escarpments are 3D structures that provide habitat and shelter for typically rocky fish;
Escarpments can sustain fish abundance and biomass comparable to rocky substrates;
Higher structural complexity of escarpments enhances fish diversity and biomass

From: Escarpments within Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica meadows increase habitat heterogeneity and structural complexity enhancing fish diversity and biomass

Results:
Total fish abundance was similar between rocky substrates and escarpments but up to 5-fold higher than in seagrass meadows. Similarly, total fish biomass was comparable between rocky substrates and seagrass escarpments, but 18-fold higher than in seagrass meadows. On the other hand, total number of fish species and Shannon´s diversity Index were significantly higher in rocky substrates than in seagrass escarpments. In addition, total number of species and Shannon´s diversity Index in seagrass escarpments were significantly higher than in seagrass meadows.

To conserve migratory marine life, protected areas are not enough. Migratory Species need dynamic management strategies (real-time #tracking , shifting shipping lanes/requiring vessel speed limits, stricter fishing regulations, in key habitats and timings) and international cooperation.

Interregionalization opportunities advantaged riverine hunter-fishers over herders. Tin from Altai mines made possible large-scale bronze production that brought metal and metal artifacts from Ural mines and forgeries westward to Europe. 3
In the same time frame (as the 4.2 Ka climate event) came the Seima-Turbino Transcultural Phenomenon (henceforth ST), an archaeological complex marked by distinctive bronze artifacts, especially symbols of power such as spearheads and axe heads, found across many archaeological cultures and along major waterways from the Altai to Scandinavia. In particular, tin from Altai mines made possible large-scale bronze production, with the forging and casting done there as well as in the southeastern Ural area and Southwest Asia. The most recent radiocarbon dates place ST between c. 4,200 and 3,900 BP, and somewhat later west of the Urals along the Volga (Marchenko et al. 2017; Krause et al. 2019; Chernykh 2008).

ST is evidently the archaeological signature of a waterborne trade network (Barfield 2009; Nichols & Rhodes 2018) that brought metal from Ural and Sayan mines and metal artifacts from Ural forgeries westward to Europe. Its heyday coincides rather closely with the 4.2 ka event. The trade network itself probably existed long before the Bronze Age and demonstrably continued into the Middle Ages as the Bulgar and Viking trade routes.

The catastrophic climate event caused drought in the low and mid latitudes of continental interiors, wetter conditions in the northwest of Eurasia. Competition and warfare were intense, and militarization increased. www.jbe-platform.com/content/jour... 2
It was Common Uralic that was involved in Seima-Turbino trade and Indo-Iranian contacts. The non-pastoral, non-agricultural, sparsely distributed Commion Uralic populations suffered less from the 4.2 ka event and accompanying plague, and were able to recover from it faster than the denser stockbreeding Indo-European populations. As a result, early Uralic replaced IE-speaking populations along the Volga and near the Urals, acquiring no Indo-European substratum and no evidence of IE lexical contact prior to the Indo-Iranian episode.lThe 4.2 ka event and ST are nearly simultaneous and the I-I episode occurred within that time range, and we suggest they are causally connected. During the drought, herders saw their traditional subsistence falter and fail, and the populations of herds and probably herders were reduced by famine. There is evidence of overgrazing on the steppe in late Yamnaya times (Anthony 2007: 330), half a millennium earlier, so it must be assumed that by 4,200 BP the entire grazable Pontic-Caspian steppe was inhabited to carrying capacity, with no leeway except what could be gained by warfare. To the east, the alternative was to seek water sources at the steppe periphery. Herders from the almost certainly Indo-Iranian-speaking Poltavka culture crowded into the river valleys around the Urals, where they established fixed year-round settlements (Anthony 2007: 371–411, especially 389–391, describing permanent settlement as a strategy for claiming access among traditionally mobile societies facing diminishing resources). Competition and warfare were intense, and militarization increased.

Also "how an era of global climate changes helped the Uralic populations spread and have continental-scale effects on language and culture" A 🧵 Feat. : •The 4.2 ka BP Megadrought (aka the boundary between mid and late Holocene) •ST= Seima-Turbino Transcultural Phenomenon 1
Archaeologists have long connected Uralic's spread with what is called the Seima-Turbino phenomenon, or the sudden appearance around 4,000 years ago of technologically advanced bronze-casting methods across northern Eurasia.

The resulting artifacts, primarily weapons and other displays of power, have also been tied to an era of global climate changes that could have advantaged the small-scale cultures that spoke Uralic languages during and after the Seima-Turbino phenomenon. The newest genetic samples, assembled by Kim with the help of other archaeologists, including third co-lead author Leonid Vyazov at Czechia's University of Ostrava, revealed strong currents of Yakutia ancestry at a succession of ancient burial sites stretching gradually to the west, with each bearing rich reserves of Seima-Turbino objects.

"This is a story about the will, the agency of populations who were not numerically dominant in any way but were able to have continental-scale effects on language and culture," said Kim, an archaeologist with longstanding interest in Siberia and Central Asia.

Every spring, thousands of fish swim through Utrecht's canals and waterways, searching for a place to spawn and reproduce.

Map of the canals of Utrecht, through which the fish swim.In the heart of the city lies the beautiful Weerdsluis, a manually operated lock.

When the lock gates are closed, fish are forced to wait, wasting valuable time and energy - making them easy prey for birds and predatory fish.

To help the fish, an underwater camera is installed at the lock. If fish appear on screen, you can press the doorbell! This alerts the lock keeper, who will open the lock when many fish are waiting.

You can "ring" the Fish Doorbell from early March to late May

People do so enthusiastically every year. In 2024, the Fish Doorbell attracted around 2.7 million viewers, from America to Brazil! The project has gained global recognition, helping people worldwide learn about fish migration and Utrecht's underwater world.

La sharia ☠️
Laura Ingram: New York had the chance to turn the state around by electing Lee Zeldin governor; they chose Hochul. Bragg & James tried to destroy Trump; they failed. Nothing they or AOC have done has made New Yorkers' lives better. And now they've taken a suicidal path-socialism

Meghan McCain: Conservatives have no place in New York City and the ones who argue my point defiantly still living there are going to fafo.

Laura Loomer: There will be another 9/11 in NYC and @ZohranKMamdani will be to blame.

JohnRocker: NEW YORKERS ARE
RET**DED

Patrick Bet-David: Sharia Law is the end goal. NYC is just the opening move.

It answered: 1) could this be scalable globally? = YES 2) when? It depends on the policies that can speed up the transition, but nonetheless it will, eventually, because they are cheaper now even without subsidies. Can't say exactly when, but they're faster than any other source, no doubts.
8 days ago on this platform

Jameson Reichert: Thing is, wind and solar can totally stay afloat without subsidies. We're just using the subsidies to build them out faster

Jesse D. Jenkins: Yep. See difference in a world with and without ITC/PTC in these charts from REPEAT Project's latest report (at repeatproject.org/reports). And speed matters to US energy prices, economic security w.r.t. gas price shocks, and our ability to power data centers and the industries of the future.

Processing whey for human consumption pushes costs onto ecosystems and communities In EU is reserved for Prosciutto di Parma hogs A balanced diet improves water quality, an effect comparable to upgrading wastewater treatment plants; the largest potential to reduce nitrogen is in coastal cities.
Instead, small dairies like River Whey often give their whey to local hog farms a practice with historical precedent. For centuries, whey-fed pork has been a means of closing the loop between dairy and meat production. In Europe, whey is specially reserved for raising more marketable Italian hogs to produce Prosciutto di Parma. In the U.S., artisanal producers still follow this model, often mixing whey with spent brewery grain and feeding it to pigs.

Yet these practices are the exception, not the rule. Most commercial whey protein comes from industrial-scale dairy operations, where their extra profit pushes true costs onto ecosystems and communities.
The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, said that if Americans ate protein at recommended amounts, projected nitrogen excretion rates in 2055 would be 27% less than they are today despite population growth.

The study is the first to estimate how much protein consumption contributes to excess nitrogen in the environment through human waste. It also indicates that coastal cities have the largest potential to reduce nitrogen excretions headed for their watersheds.

Per your source: - generators were turned off in July '24 ahead of its full closure in '28 - the EnergyConnect project delay raised concerns for SA - gen. back online to support the grid supply in periods of high demand - EC project ready in '27 ⚛️ can't help SA 1ˢᵗ 🌏 non-hydro 100%REN grid by'27
From the same ABC News article shared by Christian:
In July, French company Engie turned off its Port Lincoln and Snuggery peaking generators, ahead of its full closure in 2028.Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis has sought rule changes that would give the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) the power to compel companies to bring decommissioned generators back online to support the grid supply during periods of high demand.

Mr Koutsantonis has warned the forecast for the reliability of power supply in SA this summer - which shows a predicted shortfall of 200 megawatts - has been underestimated because the AEMO has not accounted for the delay in a new interconnector with New South Wales.

The $2.3 billion project Energy Connect will establish 900 kilometres of transmission lines between SA and NSW, allowing greater flow of electricity both ways.
It was due to be completed by July 2026 but is currently about 12 months behind schedule.South Australia has secured federal funding through a Renewable Energy Transformation Agreement to become the first non-hydro grid globally to achieve 100% net renewable energy...
South Australia's renewable milestone highlights the evolving energy landscape as it aims to retire coal by 2032. This target was initially set by the previous Liberal government and accelerated from 2030 to 2027 by the current administration.
Federal Climate Minister Chris Bowen announced the deal at Port Augusta, formerly home to a coal plant and now a green energy hub, and highlighted the significance of South Australia's contribution to the federal Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), which targets 32 GW of new renewable capacity across Australia by 2030. The state’s secured funding allows it to move forward with critical infrastructure and grid stability projects, supporting new renewable developments.
The expansion includes several wind and solar projects, with South Australia’s largest solar plant, the 412 MW Goyder South wind farm, set to connect to the grid. New battery storage installations at sites like Blyth, Hallett, and Clements Gap, among others, will further advance the state’s journey to 80% renewable energy over the next year, laying the groundwork for achieving the 100% net renewable milestone by 2027.

Well from your own source: "The cumulative impacts of wind power plants AND the GAS PIPELINE in the same areas would be devastating for the environment and the local economy." I think that a Gas Pipeline is more disruptive than the wind turbines. The plan should be to stop the pipeline, not wind

In the same areas of the Apennines is also planned the route of the gas pipeline "Linea Adriatica", in project by the SNAM s.p.a.

The planned energy infrastructure is approximately 687 km long, with a 1200mm diameter pipeline lying at 5 metres depth (73 bar pressure), and a 40-metre service facility (20 on each side), plus the inevitable logistical corollary of track and construction sites.

This is a nonsense, really. You should stop. You are cherry-picking rare events for the sake of what? Do you know that without REN we'll still rely in FF, that are harming the environment more than anything else? Your uninformed opinion is dangerous. ilgiornaledellambiente.it/energie-rinn....
Harnessing power from the wind is one of the cleanest and most sustainable ways to generate electricity as it produces no toxic pollution or global warming emissions. Wind is also abundant, inexhaustible, and affordable, which makes it a viable and large-scale alternative to fossil fuels

...A small number of wind turbines have also caught fire, and some have leaked lubricating fluids, but these occurrences are rare.

Don't know what you're saying here, maybe about migratory routes? Anyway there are study even on these, I reposted one new steady about that just a couple of days ago...making better turbines for birds is possible, it doesn't mean we shouldn't do them. Fossil Fuels kill way more birds.

You should READ your own sources: -there's NO WWF involved, just the son of Pratesi -Italia Nostra and Amici della Terra are fake environmentalists, in fact Amici della Terra was expelled from the original Friends of the Earth for their indulgence on fossil gas Please do better than this nonsense

It was discovered by Francesco Pratesi, the son of the founder of WWF who died days ago, the environmentalists of Tess (Energy transition without speculation), Italia Nostra, Amici della Terra and Maremma Viva who are fighting against «the installation of more than 100 wind turbines on the fields and hills of Maremma overlooking the famous protected areas of the coast, from Grosseto to Tuscia laziale».

That article is misleading. x.com/g_rizzo76/st... Also, there are many ways to reduce the wind turbines' impact on birds bsky.app/profile/ian-... Please don't spread this false propaganda. More here, from Hanna Ritchie's Sustainability by numbers: www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/wind-power...
ASK MIT CLIMATE
Do wind turbines kill birds?
Yes—but only a fraction as many as are killed by house cats, buildings, or even the fossil fuel operations that wind farms replace.
https://climate.mit.edu/ask-mit/do-wind-turbines-kill-birds
Chart by Statista: Annual estimated bird mortality from selected anthropogenic causes in the U.S.
Cats are the main killers of bird, followed by collision with building glass, vehicles, poison, electrical lines, electrocutions and, at last, collision with wind turbines.

Note to Giuseppe: if we want to follow what the numbers are saying, we should get rid of glasses, never let cats outside without leash and make safe electrical lines. Wind Turbines are not the problem and they can even be improved with precautions that are small and cheapy.

"Noi siamo contrari all'uso di armi nucleari"

Fonte: Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation
