The Rhythm of Rain and Sun, ch8—Wriothesley and Neuvillette begin their investigation into a young boy's unexpected death. archiveofourown.org/works/573283... #neuwriolette
“You’re making excuses for me,” Neuvillette says.

Wriothesley shakes his head. “I’m laying out the truth. From where I’m standing, it’s clear that you’ve been doing so much. That you’re overworked and stretched thin. And the person you should’ve been able to lean on, she had her own shit going on that made it impossible for you two to trust each other. You’ve been operating at, what, half capacity for the better part of at least a century.”

“You’ve had a lot to deal with,” Wriothesley continues. “One shitty judge—justice—even a handful of them—it’s understandable you didn’t notice.”

“But unacceptable.”

“Stop beating yourself up,” Wriothesley says.

A smile tugs at Neuvillette’s lips. “Should I?” he asks.

“Yes.”

“Then so must you.”

The Rhythm of Rain and Sun, ch7—Wriothesley sits down with Clorinde, and everyone receives some devastating news. archiveofourown.org/works/573283... #neuwriolette
Neuvillette does up his tie without question, studying Wriothesley as he does so. “You look nervous.”

“Well, I feel like a wreck, so I’ll take just nervous as a win,” Wriothesley drawls. He fusses with the knot Neuvillette leaves against his throat, wanting to pull it away from his skin but knowing he shouldn’t. It’s fine. He’s fine. This is all fine.

Meeting his dead best friend is also fine. Totally normal.

“You do not have to speak with her,” Neuvillette reminds him.

“I do,” he insists. “If Clorinde’s here—” He thinks of Emily, alive on the streets of Fontaine. “Maybe this is some kind of second chance or—or something. I dunno. But I can’t not talk to her.” He huffs. “I can’t run away.”
