Martin Fry’s gold suit wasn’t simply great ’80s fashion. It helped explain exactly what ABC wanted pop to become. Here's how the suits, sound and glamour of 'The Lexicon of Love' all told the same story. zurl.co/tMk6J

How ABC's Martin Fry Turned Suits Into A Genre Statement - That Eric Alper
Martin Fry didn’t just put on a suit. He put on an argument about what pop music could look like. When ABC arrived in the early 1980s, Fry’s gold lamé suits, tuxedos and immaculate tailoring looked spectacularly deliberate. Here was a young singer from Sheffield dressing like he’d wandered out of a glamorous nightclub, an […]

This guy just dropped into my backyard. I see them all the time at the pond, but this is the first one to drop by the house. Great Egret, not a shadow of a doubt…
Great Egret walking on green grass in front of a brown wooden privacy fence in my backyard. The large slender bird is all white with a yellow bill and eyes. It has a long neck and bill and thin gray legs. Its shadow is cast on the fence slightly in front of it.

Deer Spirit. Edo Period, Japan. 1615-1868.
Standing atop a swirling, golden cloud formation against a vast expanse of deep indigo, a sacred white stag turns its head in quiet, alert grace. Adorned with a ceremonial harness and an ornate saddle (kura) fitted with delicate brass bells, the stag bears upon its back a branching sacred tree (sakaki). Rising above the foliage is a luminous, oversized golden disk representing the sacred mirror, fringed by fluttering white paper streamers (shide) and cascading clusters of wisteria. In the upper register, the dark, forested ridge of sacred Mount Mikasa rises beneath a deep sky holding a glowing celestial orb, its forested slopes cradling partially hidden shrine roofs and white blossom clusters. The high-contrast harmony between the brilliant gold leaf (kinhaku), the pristine white coat of the messenger, and the light-absorbing indigo field creates a striking visual hymn to divine epiphany.
Executed during the Edo period (1615–1868), this painting belongs to the venerated genre of Kasuga Shika Mandara (Kasuga Deer Mandala), a devotional art form born from the syncretic fusion of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs (shinbutsu shūgō). Centered on the Kasuga Grand Shrine in Nara, these mandalas honor the divine messenger (shinroku) of the deity Takemikazuchi no Mikoto, who according to legend traveled to Nara riding upon the back of a sacred white deer. The gold disk surmounting the sakaki branch symbolizes the manifestation deities of Kasuga (Kasuga Daimyōjin), operating under the honji suijaku doctrine wherein Shinto kami are understood as local avatars of universal Buddhas. The cascading wisteria directly honors the ancestral tutelary deity of the powerful Fujiwara clan. The delicate mineral pigments, gold foil gilding, and precise line-work exhibit the high achievement of Edo religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery in sacred painting), designed to serve as a portable focus for private worship and contemplation.

🐴 This earthenware figure of a #horse is over 1000 years old. It is a fine example of the many tomb models of horses and other domestic animals that have survived from the T'ang Dynasty. If you look closely, you can see traces of original orange pigment.
Figures like these were made in moulds, with the parts joined together using a wet clay mixture called slip before firing. This type of horse, in life larger than the native Chinese breeds, and highly valued, was imported from Ferghana (present day Uzbekistan).

See it on display in Gallery 10 on Level G. Ashmolean Museum Collection

MTV went live at 12:01 a.m. on August 1, 1981, with footage of a rocket blasting into space, an astronaut planting an MTV flag on the moon and five words that sounded less like an introduction than a declaration: “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” Then came The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” It […]

Excavations on Hisarlik hill in Turkey have uncovered the site’s oldest agora, proving Troy was resettled 80–90 years after the war, not deserted for centuries before the Aeolians arrived.
