Don't FOG it up this holiday season by sending Fats, Oils, Grease down the drain. The results would be bleak. Like Uncle Frank's hot takes on current events.

It's #NationalPublicWorksWeek. A county with some 500 miles of water mains means repairs must take place at any time, in any temperature and in almost any location hundreds of times a year. Saluting #TheOtherFirstResponders. #NPWW buff.ly/3WHigCe

What Gustafson is most proud of is knowing that his work is designed to improve and enrich the lives of others. “It’s kind of rewarding, you’re not just doing stuff for yourself,” he said. “It’s like a gift.”
Public Works carpenter Sheldon Gustafson holds a circular saw while standing in the department's Carpenter Shop.

The "Real People. Real Work." campaign spotlights eight employees who are representative of the department’s expansive portfolio.

Through their stories and journeys, we learn about Public Works’ services, projects and programs and how they fit into the City’s policy goals to, for example, activate public spaces, combat climate change and bolster resiliency.

Ever wondered what the little flags public works crews plant in your yard every spring mean? Confused by blue spray paint across the road? It means something important is lurking underground, and you can actually identify what it is if you know the ~secret code~ (it's not a secret, it's right here)
An APWA Guide to Uniform Temporary Marking of Underground Facilities. This text heavy document features lots of information for public works professionals, but it also explains what the different color of markings construction crews leave in your yard mean.
White—Route of proposed subsurface line or location of proposed excavation;
Red—Electric power lines, cables and conduit systems and lighting cables;
Yellow—Gas, oil, steam, petroleum, gaseous, or dangerous materials;
Orange—Communications, cable television, alarm or signal lines, cables or conduit systems;
Blue—Water, irrigation, and slurry lines;
Purple—reclaimed water;
Green—Sewer and drain lines.

All grown up, San Francisco needed a dedicated body to construct and maintain its streets, design its buildings and engineer its pipes and sewers. Born was the Board of Public Works. A lot has happened in 125 years. This is our story. 🔗 www.sfpublicworkstv.org/125years
