I’ve been in Yellowstone NP and Cody, WY for the last week. Leaving social connections home was a good decision for enjoying the sights & low connectivity. For fun, I named each bull elk I saw with a random name. Meet Dennis, my last, smooching & checking on his girls. 🦌♥️🦌

What’s up? Bluesky asks everyday. This week it’s chaos due to having the house painted. It will take some work to tidy after the job is done. Somehow today’s gray sky and wind gusts fit with the pulled-apart yard. The blue sky of the last couple of days is no more.

The Missoula Symphony opened its season today with a program for America 250. The entire program was composed by American composers, and some of the pieces were new to me, as was the first composer, Joan Tower. The Copland piece was new too me, and though written at 26 yo, it sounded like Copland.

Preconcert stage at the Dennison theater. The lighting is moody with blues, reds, and violets.

A walk in the Jocko Valley revealed the southern end of the Missions, Gray Wolf Peak, hiding behind our valley’s northeastern ridge. The silence was a gift.

We have new neighbors. Six big, beautiful horses are now grazing across the road, adding entertainment as I wash dishes. The old Lutheran Church closed and the property was sold. Fencing went up right away, then the horses arrived.

The first snow dusting on the Rattlesnakes arrived overnight. The elevation of this peak is just around 8,000 ft. The Missions and many other higher peaks received a true covering of snow. Let the season begin! #Mountains #Fall #Montana

A broad gravel road curves quietly into the mountains, its pale gray surface drawing the eye toward a dense wall of dark evergreen forest. The conifers cover the steep slope almost continuously, broken here and there by ribbons and scattered patches of brilliant autumn gold.

Along the roadside, aspens have reached their full fall color. Their yellow leaves catch the sunlight so intensely that the trees seem illuminated against the shadowed mountainside. Lower shrubs and willows gather thickly along the road, already fading toward the muted greens and browns of late season.

Above it all stretches an exceptionally clear, deep-blue western sky, without a cloud to interrupt it. The contrast is striking: silver-gray road, nearly black-green forest, luminous golden aspens, and an immense blue sky. The bend in the road leaves the country ahead unseen, giving the scene that familiar mountain invitation—the sense that something wilder and more beautiful may be waiting just around the corner.
