that stasis aspect of it is sooo like. heartachingly tragic and beautiful to me and it kills me that it’s so underdiscussed when it comes to their dynamic. their highest kizuna title is literally “still distant”. i really think it’s my favorite aspect of knmz and always has been.

mizuki likes idols and cute anime music, ena also likes mmj and has heard vbs perform, mafuyu has reacted to shizuku performing in mmj. there’s many mixed events showing they like other music. but kanade’s in this world was empty and didn’t connect with them. i think there’s a lot more there.

she still has to care for him. he isn’t healthier now. even she believes all she needs to be happy is her dad, but relying on him won’t help her grow. nightcord even find her music boring in this reality, but we know all of them have had a positive reaction to upbeat/happier music before.

she felt she had to help care for her dad, she had to remind him to eat and make sure he was okay. maybe she was also repressing her emotions and memories of her mom back then for the sake of keeping her family together. in her wl2 world, nothing really changed. her dad just never collapsed.

we kind of even get hints of this, kanade’s grandmother says “until recently” kanade had always looked guilty while at her mom’s grave, which she visits yearly iirc. we also see the memory of her mom’s last words to her, it must have been traumatic. she’s blocked out a lot of memories of her mom.

she’s connected so closely with mafuyu for a reason. mafuyu also thought she was okay most her life until she “suddenly” got depressed. i think these unhealthy mental habits of hers probably have been there for a while.

additional rambly notes about what’s going on here ^^ i think a lot about ocd kanade…

compulsions and themes i wanted to show at play here:

rumination: a compulsion where everything is internal. instead of ignore and accept an intrusive thought (mafuyu will disappear), the brain becomes stuck and terrified, and starts reviewing things. it thinks this will be helpful and bring either clarity or relief, but it doesn’t end.

real event: a theme where the brain clings onto things that have actually happened in the past to fuel the cycle. kanade HAS experienced loss multiple times that she wasn’t able to or felt unable to do anything about. as a result, her brain uses this as “proof” she has failed and has a chance to again, and that she’s a bad person. because she feels she “failed”, she feels she has a right to make up for it. if she doesn’t, she’ll be a bad person. forcing herself to move on from the thought would be selfish. a common trigger is situations similar to the event that occured.

reassurance seeking: a compulsion. asking the virtual singers or other niigo members for advice and clarity (specifically in the instance of saving mafuyu) can be a form of reassurance seeking. she shuts down suggestions that require her to look internally because they make her more anxious, but she wants to make sure she’s doing the right thing with an easier and clearer solution. reassurance seeking is a trap of a compulsion, because the way the ocd brain works hasn’t been challenged, the brain will question what it’s told, or feel like it left out multiple important details and feel the need to keep asking and asking. just to be sure.

replaying: it’s an aspect of rumination. instead of physically checking something over and over again, the brain looks at a situation over and over again to find out what you missed to help a situation and if there’s really nothing you can do or if things are really okay.

awh i’m so glad! i also have ocd (and am currently going through a relapse with it ^^;) and i’ve always felt kanade becomes so much easier to understand from an ocd perspective, it feels comforting to me. i wish you luck with your own struggles!!
