additional rambly notes about what’s going on here ^^ i think a lot about ocd kanade…

compulsions and themes i wanted to show at play here:

rumination: a compulsion where everything is internal. instead of ignore and accept an intrusive thought (mafuyu will disappear), the brain becomes stuck and terrified, and starts reviewing things. it thinks this will be helpful and bring either clarity or relief, but it doesn’t end.

real event: a theme where the brain clings onto things that have actually happened in the past to fuel the cycle. kanade HAS experienced loss multiple times that she wasn’t able to or felt unable to do anything about. as a result, her brain uses this as “proof” she has failed and has a chance to again, and that she’s a bad person. because she feels she “failed”, she feels she has a right to make up for it. if she doesn’t, she’ll be a bad person. forcing herself to move on from the thought would be selfish. a common trigger is situations similar to the event that occured.

reassurance seeking: a compulsion. asking the virtual singers or other niigo members for advice and clarity (specifically in the instance of saving mafuyu) can be a form of reassurance seeking. she shuts down suggestions that require her to look internally because they make her more anxious, but she wants to make sure she’s doing the right thing with an easier and clearer solution. reassurance seeking is a trap of a compulsion, because the way the ocd brain works hasn’t been challenged, the brain will question what it’s told, or feel like it left out multiple important details and feel the need to keep asking and asking. just to be sure.

replaying: it’s an aspect of rumination. instead of physically checking something over and over again, the brain looks at a situation over and over again to find out what you missed to help a situation and if there’s really nothing you can do or if things are really okay.

everyday i think about the instances of mizuki suggesting to niigo they’re all in love as a joke. it feels so much like she’s like “👀” like she’s testing the waters to gauge their reactions and it’s so cute. even the ringfit adventure playthrough wasn’t safe from this.

when an alter and their feelings has gone neglected for a while, they can start using ‘mean’ methods of getting another alter’s attention and harbor a resentment. this kanade isn’t evil, she’s teasing kanade and messing with her because she’s frustrated kanade won’t look inwards and find her.

switching in systems has long been seen and misunderstood as possession for centuries. it’s an interesting choice the other kanade is a ghost, it feels more than just a nod to the original mv. sometimes, the black/grayouts between switches can also feel like a nap. like nodding off for a bit.

i saw something like this for deltarune once and i felt inspired
