The high watermark of secular optimism has long since passed, and nothing has replaced it. And the institutional decline of the church shows no sign of slowing down. What now for Christianity in Europe? Whether you are a believer or not, this- from a historian of belief- is well worth a read.

I will always feel weird doing self promotion, but my latest article has been officially published in "Renaissance and Reformation/Renaissance et Reforme," titled "Jockeying for Printed Reputation: Giovanni Bussi and the Apuleius of 1469." jps.library.utoronto.ca/index.php/re...
A screenshot of a journal article page titled “Jockeying for Printed Reputation: Giovanni Bussi and the Apuleius of 1469,” by Barry Torch, with an abstract in English and Italian, followed by the section heading “Premise” and the opening paragraph. The page is from Renaissance and Reformation, Winter 2026.

No better encouragement to seriously rethink the tension between writing for one's peers and doing it for one's audience than reading the labels and explanations at the Biennale.

So much talent wasted from the great applicants who don't get them. So much effort and resources required to evaluate these. So much dread and imposter syndrome for many of those who consider applying Something needs to give.

Woodcut image from the 17th-century ballad, Londons ordinary: or, Every man in his humour.
On the right, in the image, a man with a prominent moustache stands. He has something on his back and is holding what looks like a ring in his right hand and a hammer in his left. He has a dark cap on and is wearing seventeenth-century clothing with his calves on show. To the left of the image is a table with a candle, a tankard, a cup and a bottle upon it and something, maybe cards, lying flat.
