Let's say you've never been to Portland Oregon and you ask me what it's like, I'll say well today I was at the airport walking to the rental cars and there was a therapy alpaca for us all.

run do not walk to the Taryn Simon exhibit at the Guggenheim NYC. The way the exhibit deliberately uses the structure of the building is breathtaking (and that's just one slice)

I really loved Lincoln in the Bardo; while the quote is serious, every time I read this bit, it feels like a line on my CV: "Perennially outmatched by circumstance, Inadequately endowed with compensatory graces"

Ok the classicists had their time in the sun with the Odyssey. But it's time to move over, the Peasants' Revolt movie is coming out! Get ready, medievalists!

Long overdue snaps from the glorious Zubarán show in London. The crispness of his whites and richness of the textiles (the light glimmering on her skirt!) are extraordinary

(Catholic) author Matthew Walther, on Vance's book communion (in the Atlantic): "he (JD) describes himself attending 'a Mass mourning Christ's passion' a phrase so theologically defective that it could be the subject of an entire ecumenical council." Savage! And true! I laughed out loud.

Posting this old photo in honor of how I cried with relief and gratitude when everyone in my family was able to be vaccinated for Covid. At one site, the state offered people these papers (behind me) to say why they were getting taxed. They were so beautiful to read. #researchsaveslives

I'm on vacation in the PNW. We see a house w/ a huge gate way too fancy for the area & get curious. Husband finds a YouTube video since it was for sale. It's a bizarre European 'style' & the owners were art collectors. in the hallway what Im pretty sure is an 18th c black saint, Benedict of Palermo

The only thing in the natural world i love more than watching the sunrise over mountain tundra it's sipping my coffee on a glorious morning on Vancouve Island. A view of the ocean is right behind those trees, but here i get the birds

A hill I will die on: it is correct to translate 'convento' as convent even when you are talking about friars (men). A convent is not a house for women, it is a particular type of religious institution. Likewise, some nuns live in monasteries.

my social life is so much better in Madrid than home. Maybe because the isolation of the archive demands social decompression, even for an introvert (in contrast to the powerful social demands of the office)?

One of things I sometimes meditate on is the in betweeness of being a scholar conducting research in Europe, esp in this era of destructive overtourism. Not a tourist, not a resident, trying to minimize impact.

Man I love early modern authors who are haters. I've discovered in a book I'm reading the author reproduced an engraving identical to a famous one in order to ridicule it. Amazing level of disrespect. it made me laugh.

Bounced from suffocating Madrid heat (genuinely making me ill) to cool Lisbon, finding at least one rare book I need. I'm glad I came, in spite of the Last minute scramble. Oh and I found two sculptures of San Bento de Palermo in Spain!

part of the problem with needing to make travel arrangements to Europe far in advance is that sometimes I'm guessing about timing if some events haven't nailed down the schedule yet. long story short, I have a very awkward couple of empty days to figure out what to do in July

here's something that might be helpful to early career researchers: starting at a new archive can be really hard. I've been at thus for 20 yrs & still have occasional crash outs trying to navigate confusing systems. You'll figure it out, be patient with yourself.

here's something we (historians) don't talk enough about = the archive is magical but the archive hurts. I mean physically. it's too hot or too cd, the seats are hard wood, it requires squinting over sometime indecipherabld hands in twisting posture for hours. in complete silence

Being in crisis & grief during the holidays is surreal, esp when traveling. It's nearing the anniversary of a devastating run, a dash from the bedside of a critically ill loved one to a visit with a dear friend in hospice. For all of you out there experiencing grief and trauma this season, I see you
