This is a BANGER off a lineup if I do say so myself, and only the first four talks! We'll be posting about the rest of the talks over the course of the week, but you can see the entire schedule here: www.roguelike.club/event2026.html

I lost a beautiful custom Prada suit to these moth motherfuckers. But that suit got people in trouble, so it's probably for the best.

okay, "cruffin" is not a real word, and those of you trying to bring about the apotheosis by stuffing more breakfast things into this abomination are not helping, and not going to achieve your ends.

Owls in Towels @owls-in-towels.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
11th of Owltober! This Powerful Owl was paralysed on admission but was soon perching and flying thanks to care from Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Eumundi (a satellite of RSPCA Queensland) in Australia. Want to donate? supportrspcaqld.org.au/donate Source: fb.com/475969127083... #owlsintowels 💛🦉
A Powerful Owl is wrapped to the chin in a coriander towel, looking like a large egg shaped burrito. From top of said burrito a wide beak and pair of amber eyes emerge with a blank expression - innocent and curious. The bundle of owl has not a hint of malice at being sat on the lap of the light denim shorts-clad rehabilitator taking the photo. Her chin feathers look a little pink, from a recent meal perhaps. The beak is slate black with a cere (the fleshy membrane at the top of bird beaks) the colour of beeswax. Her facial feathers form a white X with white streaks radiating from her forehead on plumage that is otherwise muted brown to licorice black. Behind is a bark chip floor next to the green wall of a prefab sheet metal shed.Perched on a branch in an outdoor enclosure is the Powerful Owl patient. Her body is pear to eggplant shaped with orange toes and black talons emerging beneath. Her head's turned in profile and her orange eyes bulge a little. Her plumage is a dusty brownish-black with white bars across the wings, and ditto but inverted across the torso, though instead of bars it's more like small bat-shaped V's (spooky). Her wings are stretched down behind her like she's running Naruto style but her legs are still. A second aviary with steel pipe-framing appears ~30 m (100 ft) away through the green mesh netting behind, on a well-vegetated site with short lawns and tall canopies. In close-up, taken from below, the Powerful Owl stares down at us from her perch with wide eyes and an expression of surprise (the data so far suggests this is her default). The black and white bars on her wings are staggered across individual feathers, creating a checkerboard pattern in places. The bat-shaped patterns on her torso are discernible at this distance and upon inspection are clearly an amalgam of the Batman logo from a) the Batman Beyond animated series (1999) and b) Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008). Her feet are practically next to the lens and notably the talons are huge and toes are hairy.

Hmm. Hmmmm. I slept on 2049 bc I was like "a sequel to Blade Runner? pshaw." But it was actually good. M. Yeoh? Promising. But, Amz Prime? "Here's a beloved story and $100 million, can you make a series that's that, but sucks all the life and atmosphere out of it?" Established track record.

Well I can't sing for shit, so pretty much anyone would be an upgrade. Leonard Cohen. I can't really tell you why, but I'm fairly confident in this.

Personally, I like a "tonic & tonic". You take a pint glass with rocks, fill it half way with tonic, and then fill it the rest of the way with tonic. All the extra flavor comes from bitters. Grapefruit bitters, cherry bitters, rhubarb bitters, orange cream bitters.

It's great to see tailoring accommodate such extreme movement today. This level of tailoring was a bit more common in the past, as you can see in old films featuring Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, but many modern suits will lift off the wearer's neck even when they're just walking.

Yeah. Keflavik is perfectly fine for a small regional airport. Not its fault it is connected to other nations and stuff like this. :)

Got my own Novavax at Costco in Brooklyn today. Couldn't find it anywhere else, but Costco had same-day appointments, easy-peasy. 👍 Decent hot dog, too.

Yep. For me in most contexts, hex "numbers" are just sequence of symbols, not really *numbers*. I read them like I would a password or phone number.

Possible differentiation: This drum bit is awesome, but if you just did the same thing two or even three times in the same song, that'd be kind of lame. In "Barracuda", the guitar just keeps doing the same dang thing every 4 bars, and it keeps getting awesomer. That's a "riff".
000
apjanke @apjanke.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I mean I guess, in a degenerate sense, it's a transition from nothing to the song, so that qualifies as a fill.
110
apjanke @apjanke.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
A "fill" is a decorative transitional thing. A "riff" is a melodic phrase that you can keep repeating and do theme & variations on. Like, the "Barracuda" guitar thing, that's a riff. This is not a riff. An "intro" is about position. Neal Peart would know what this is. I guess "intro fill" it is.

I've come to believe that keeping notes like this is super important, because who can actually remember everything? Hesitant to get tied in to any particular app, though.

Bunch of .txt files, in various folders in my Dropbox. One special flat '#notes/' dir that syncs with iOS writer apps (like 1Writer), and then a bunch of hierarchical folders elsewhere. Content is Markdown, but I use .txt extension so syntax highlighting doesn't turn on.

"way more numbers" <- Yeah! Exact decimal expansions are the exception, not the rule. (Or any other base.) But they feel good. Kinda like how classic Newtonian mechanics is just a small special-case approximation, but one well suited to the scale humans tend to work on and experience?
