Right now, billionaires and corporations are spending millions to stop you from voting. The answer isn't staying home. It's showing up. Take the Can't Stop CA pledge at apen.us/vote

Big Oil has more money than ever. But we're gaining ground. One real win this session: SB 954 closes a CEQA loophole big manufacturers used to dodge accountability. Now, it awaits Governor Newsom's signature. Big Oil's on offense — but so are we. 💪 #CALeg

50+ orgs. 10,000 letters to lawmakers. We didn’t pass SB 1259, but we moved something real: legislators are asking hard questions about what Big Oil is hiding when a refinery closes. Huge thank you to Senator Blakespear for her leadership in championing this bill.

Big Oil just killed a bill that would've made them tell the truth about refinery cleanup costs: #SB1259 is dead in the CA Assembly. They have more money than ever — and they used it to keep our communities in the dark. We're not done fighting.🧵

✅ Massive profits from the war on Iran while ordinary people pay more at the pump. ✅ Record lobbying spending. ✅ Convince #CA leaders to gut cap-and-invest and kill affordability and transparency legislation. This isn't a coincidence. It's Big Oil's business model.

47/ However, it’s not enough to stop the proposal. The board votes to move forward the proposed changes with 3 board members dissenting. Let’s be clear: Gavin Newsom’s air regulators voted to cut billions from housing, transit, and climate and hand it to Big Oil. This is a betrayal.

46/ “A no vote has nothing to do with Trump, it has to do with the communities I work with every day … many of them in the Bay Area. I don’t think we should be backed into a corner and told to vote yes on something we have serious reservations about.” Hopkins votes no! 🙌

45/ More from Hopkins: “These are the communities I’ve spent the last decade of my life working for. I can’t bring myself to vote ... against the issues I care about and the people I work for …. This proposal comes at the expense of mass transit, clean air and clean water.”

43/ Takvorian’s motion to remove the MDI from the proposal fails. It looks like the majority of the board are caving to pressure from the fossil fuel industry and misinformation from their own staff – and ready to hand billions to Big Oil through this "experimental" program ☠️

Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) @apen4ej.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
42/ As the board prepares to vote, staff and Chair Sanchez insist that anything other than an immediate approval would be a major setback for California’s climate program. Boardmember Limon pushes back: this urgency is not “based on evidence.” She seconds Takvorian’s motion.
120
Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) @apen4ej.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
41/ After hours of back and forth and confusion over the exact impacts of this proposal, Boardmember Takvorian again calls to remove MDI from the resolution. She calls the process backward, naming that by passing this resolution CARB would be “breaking promises” to impacted communities.
110
Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) @apen4ej.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
40/ Gladys Limon notes that Chair Sanchez has asked for a “runway” for the MDI “experiment.” But Limon asks: would any of us want to be on a runway for an untested plane with no off-ramp? She calls this update a “stark departure" from CARB’s legacy of reducing emissions.

Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) @apen4ej.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
39/ Chair Sanchez has proposed passing the MDI now, then doing research on the program. In response, Boardmember Takvorian proposes: remove the MDI from the changes for now, do more research, and revisit the MDI once we better understand its impacts. Seems like common sense.
110
Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) @apen4ej.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
38/ Many including Chair Sanchez are describing MDI as an “experiment.” Let’s be clear: @airresources.bsky.social are preparing to run a massive “experiment” on our communities with little evidence that gives refiners allowances covering up to 156% of emissions. Make it make sense 😡

CARB is proposing a massive handout to oil & gas industry via Cap-and-Invest 😡 And they are raiding transit and housing funding to do it 1. Transferring allocation from GGRF to Industry 2. Adding new category of MDI industry credits $1.1B yearly subsidy to Industry at loss of $900M to GGRF

37/ Boardmember Takvorian: “We need real numbers.” She points out the massive difference between the numbers CARB staff are sharing today and the data shared by the nonpartisan Legislative Analysts Office — which paint a much more dire picture of the scale and severity of cuts.
