Happy World Anthropology Day! I'm grateful to be part of a discipline that explores what it means to be human, in a time where understanding our similarities and connections in our collective pasts, presents, and futures seems more necessary than ever. #anthroday

Come join me and a great group of junior scholars working in ethnobotany! Must be an enrolled student, but a major in plant science or masters/PhD in ethnobotany is not required--I'm an anthropologist who started working with plants (academically) just a few years ago!

Classic Amazonian breakfast down at the fish market. Pictured is cucha fish, rumoured to be an aphrodisiac and fertility aid. They have spiky, armored scales and and are bottom feeders. Their suction style mouths enable them to hold onto rocks in fast currents 🐠

Whenever flooding hits, we hear in detail all about the wrecked homes, livelihoods, property, and related misery. But NEVER the major cause: that Ireland has been totally stripped of the native ecosystems like forest & bogs that would naturally have absorbed the water. share.google/aNF6Fg26wdmB...

I’m renting a room in a family’s house for my fieldwork and it comes with a cat. 😍 It’s nice to have company where I don’t have to speak my second language after days of interviews and chagra visits

Whatever you might think of Maduro, the seizure and kidnapping of a head of state takes us to a very dark place. Vast, arbitrary, extra-legal power, which could be exercised almost anywhere, regardless of the character of the target government.

Had a great time at the American Anthropological Association meeting, geeking out about agroforesty, food, and shifting livelihood strategies in the southern Colombian Amazon! The highlight of my week was reuniting with my friend and colleague Youyi, who I met in Colombia in the forest in 2023.

Acacia baileyana is common in my new Bogotá neighborhood. It’s always interesting seeing how cities landscape certain neighborhoods, and I never feel settled or at home until I know who my plant neighbors are!

PRESS RELEASE: Forty Years of Inaction Killing Lady’s Island Lake @irishtimes.com @news.rte.ie @irishexaminer.bsky.social @thejournal.ie @irishrainforest.bsky.social @thinkorswim.bsky.social @whittledaway.bsky.social @padraigbyrne.bsky.social @independent.ie Contact: saveladysislandlake@gmail.com
Image of algal bloom on Lady's Island Lake from July this year and text of press release, reading: Over forty years after local media first reported on pollution in Lady’s Island Lake, the situation has deteriorated even further and immediate action is required to prevent the imminent death of the lake.

On 24 June 1983 The People (Wexford) reported that the lake was “almost a cess pool” and that the amenity was “being shamelessly destroyed by pollution”.

Jim Hurley from South Wexford Coast Promotions, addressed a well attended public meeting in Lady’s Island Community Centre on 24 July 2025 outlining the current dire situation at Lady’s Island Lake.

Mr Hurley spoke about twelve pollution reports commissioned by Wexford County Council following the 1983 press coverage covering the period 1984-2006. The 1984 report found that the lake was polluted and that several of the twelve feeder streams were polluted, two of them badly.
Continued text of press release reading: Further monitoring was conducted and a further ten reports were published between 1990 and 2006. Several of these reports contained recommendations of the specific actions required to improve water quality in the lake and its feeder streams. Wexford County Council ceased commissioning reports in 2006.
In 2019 the EPA commissioned the most recent report, published 9 Jan 2025. This report found a significant deterioration in the quality of the water since the 1980s “due to excessive inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus from agriculture” (CLEAR, xi).

The CLEAR report recommends “reducing the use of imported nitrogen on farmland, increasing measures designed to retain nutrients on farmland and forestry”, which will prevent the nitrogen reaching the lake, “removing or capping nutrient-rich bottom sediments” from the bottom of the lake, and “maintaining or restoring the salinity regime” of the lake (CLEAR, 49).
An EPA summary of the report states clearly that “the results of our research show that no improvement in the lake’s ecology will be possible without a large reduction in nutrient run-off from land. Some amelioration may be possible by protecting the lake shoreline by tree planting, the use of artificial wetlands and the removal of nutrient rich sediments. Inevitably, society must address the conflict between the overuse of nutrients such as nitrogen and the impact this is having on our water resources”.

Save Lady’s Island Lake campaign group spokesperson Peadar McDonald states that “forty years of inaction is too much and we are almost out of time to save the lake. Jim addressed a group of concerned citizens last Thursday and outlined the urgency of the matter. This is not a new issue as can be seen via the research done over the past forty years. We are calling on Wexford Co. Council and national bodies responsible for the health of the lake (including regular tests for water pollution) to act now before it is too late.”
