My home.
Looking east from Angora, Nebraska (population 1) over the Nebraska Sandhills to my town (about twenty miles away). The scene is sand dunes covered in short prairie grass, with scrub in the foreground.

I live in a place with no cell service. I never understood the idea of "I need my phone to get around." Our last road trip a couple years ago was over 10,000 miles to Newfoundland and across Labrador from Nebraska via North Carolina, all maps.
2022 road trip shown on Mapquest . Starting in western Nebraska, stops include Tenn., NC, Mass., VT, ME, NB, PEI, NS, Newfoundland, Labrador, QC, ON, MI, ON again (north), MB, ND, SD, home.

Are only cats licensed here, or do posters need a license as well?
Bluesky license. Generating one comes from https://kojira.github.io/bluesky-license/

It shows (left going down) Name, DID, Handle, Account creation date.

Right: Avatar (a Gold Star Family pin in my case), a license number, an expiry date.

I like a little better.
A different way of displaying the Nolan Chart (the quickie method the Libertarian Party USA sorts political and economic leanings). The chart is slider graphs from left to right. Scores below ("0" is centrist):
Economic: Strongly left-wing (100%)
Social: Strongly libertarian (81%)
Civil Liberties: Strongly Pro-Liberty (62%)
Governance: Globalist (I hate that term due to other connotations 81%)
System Trust: Slightly High (31%)

What should we grow on our land here? Importing vegetables out-of-season is frightfully expensive and uses lots of diesel.
Photographs looking SE from Angora, NE (population 1) to my home (twenty miles away). This is the stabilised sand dunes of the Nebraska Sandhills. It has a few small scrub plants in the foreground, and shortgrass prairie grass through sand and ravines.

The plants are gone now after the Morrill Fire burned over a thousand square miles a couple weeks ago. The sand is starting to move again.

Before the fire, the only thing the ground could be used for is grazing livestock.

Despite all the hatred coming down the pike, I hope people were able to have a happy Trans Day of Visibility.

When food stamps transitioned to EBT cards, Nebraska had to get a waiver to continue using the stamps, due to lack of infrastructure in the rural areas. I live here:
North of Lisco, Nebraska, looking west toward my town sixteen miles away. The scene is grass-covered sand hills (no longer covered after the recent Morill Fire), with deep chasms between the hills. On the left is a sand road winding around the hills. The land is pretty much only good for low numbers of livestock.

The population density of the Nebraska Panhandle is 5.9/sq. mile. The population is 82,962. The area is 14,180 sq. miles. The largest city has 11,000 people. The next larger city is Cheyenne, Wyo. (130 miles away), 65,132. It's pretty empty here.
Looking south-west from Rose Hill Cemetery (one mile north of my town). In the foreground is the driveway. A split-rail fence separates the cemetery from the road. Across the road is twenty miles of empty plains. In the far distance are Courthouse and Jail Rocks in the county seat.

Here's two photographs I took from my car of a tornado just leaving my village. It was about three miles away.
Tornado seen from my car while driving home on a gravel road. To the right, an open field with a tornado tilted eastward and a debris field around the base. It was leaving my village.Second view of the same tornado, further away, from a street two blocks from my house. Most of the town was severely damaged from the storm.

My 2013 Smart after I hit an elk. The passenger headlamp and front are smashed, the hood is broken, the passenger door was warped, and the windscreen was warped and cracked. There is a dent on the passenger side top at the windscreen. Under the hood, the master brake cylinder was broken, meaning I had to drive home with the parking brake at low speed.

The car was towed for repairs in Denver (200 miles away). Neither my wife nor I were injured.

This is what a Smart looks like after you hit an elk.
My 2013 Smart after hitting an elk. The passanger side of the car is smashed, the windscreen is warped and cracked. The passenger door is warped and could not be opened. Damage under the hood included destruction of the master brake cylinder. I hit the elk about two miles outside of town, and came back using the parking brake and moving very slowly.

Hey, I have a real scythe and I use it frequently. I'll bet it would be no trouble to dice a drawing on paper with a scythe.
Standing next to my 2009 Smart car on the sand street in front of my house. Everything is black: The car, my clothes, my trilby hat. I'm holding my mowing scythe in the photograph (I'm the resident Reaper around here, and a Smart car is a lot more reliable than a pale horse).

Post the first album you ever bought with your own money. I was eleven.
The album cover to Yes's "Fragile" (1971). It is the first album Yes collaborated with artist Roger Dean. The picture is a stylised Earth with large trees growing around it, and a ship "sailing" in the sky. The album name and band are at the top.

The trip was from the Nebraska Panhandle, across the Mid South, up the East Coast, through New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Labrador, northern Québec, Ontario and Michigan, Manitoba, then south to home. Approximately 10,000 miles / 16,000km.

My insurance isn't too bad (mostly because my home is only worth about $18,000). Tornadoes aren't rare in this area, but a single house is an extremely small target.
A home after a tornado in my town. A cement cylinder was lifted from somewhere and deposited in the yard in the left of the photograph. In the centre, a tree is snapped off and destroyed the roof on the back of the house. Also in the centre, an electric pole is snapped off near the top. The leaves are stripped from all the trees.

My wife and I took VIA Rail (Hudson Bay Railway) from Thompson to Churchill. It was a magnificent trip.
A rock cairn on the shore of Hudson Bay in Churchill, Manitoba. It is known as an inuksuk or inukshuk. They were erected as shoreline navigation markers or the location of a safe harbour. This one has three large stones at the bottom, a flat stone across them, one large stone above that, two stones across it (the top one longer), and capping it with a narrow and tall stone. To the right in this picture is another stone. Behind it is Hudson Bay.

So it turns out Mapquest allows you to string along more stops on a map than Google does. I played around with it and created a mostly-accurate map of our last long road trip: ten thousand miles in a Smart car from Nebraska to Newfoundland and Labrador.
What a ten thousand mile trip in a Smart car looks like.

A: Home. B: Knoxville, TN. C: Raleigh, NC. D: Pittsfield, MA. E: Manchester, VT. F: Agusta, ME. G: O'Leary, PEI. H: Wood Island, PEI. J: St. Anthony, Newfoundland. K: Labrador City, Labrador. L: Sarnia, Ontario. M: My hometown in Michigan. N: Sault. Ste. Marie, Ontario. O: Winnipeg, Manitoba. Return to A via Pembina, North Dakota.

Unfortunately the asshat brigade is dragging the rest of them down with us here.
Travelling north on a gravel road heading home in 2013, a pasture to the right. In the distance is a tornado which just left my village. A few minutes later I was home; the tornado had damaged almost everything in town. My own house had its roof severely damaged, with hail damage on the north side of the house.

The Republican complaints about the balloon were nothing more than performative outrage anyway. (They can see our missile sites! They don't know how to use Wikipedia and just look them up there!) It is not illegal to take a picture of a missile site. Here's one I took near my home.
Minuteman III missile silo outside Harrisburg, Nebraska. The foregroud is the gravel road it's on. There is a gravel driveway extending into the distance. On the side of the road is a barb wire fence to keep cattle out with a double gate on wheels across the driveway. In the distance there is a second fence, with a larger electronic gate across the driveway. The low mound in the distance behind that gate is the missile silo. The machinery to the right of the driveway is a natural gas supply meter. To the right of the silo is an electric pole, a weather vane, and radio transmitter antennas. To the left of the is a small 2m high bluff. Cattle are usually allowed by the Air Force into the fenced areas to eat the prairie grass to reduce the need for mowing.
