The Novoshakhtinsk Oil Refinery is currently receiving drone sanctions. And unlike other sanctions, drone sanctions are not subject to waivers. There will be a lot more of our drone sanctions now. It's clear that this is the only reliable way to cut off Putin's war funding.🔥📉

An aperiodic reminder that since 2022 I've been leading a mission concept with JPL to fly a balloon through the skies of Venus. I'll write more about it later. For now, here's a photo of a prototype balloon flying over Nevada (left), and my workup of what it might look like at Venus (right).
A drone-captured shot of the one-third Venus aerobot prototype flying over Black Rock Desert in July 2022. Image credit: JPL-Caltech/AerostarA variable-altitude aerobot floats through the middle atmosphere of Venus; clouds are above and below the balloon, and everything has a yellow tint. This isn't the diseased skin of some alien—this is Mars! Taken by ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, this colour scene shows a portion of the planet's high southern latitudes where frost, dust, and sunlight combine to produce these pink and purple tones.
From the source: "A purple–pink–coloured patch of Mars, which is lighter on the left and darker on the right. A dark line runs from the top centre towards the bottom right, dividing the light and dark areas. At the centre of the image is a sharp light-coloured crater. Less sharp craters are scattered over the rest of the image. At the bottom left is a bright white-blue triangular patch; it looks icy."

HOLY SHIT NEW IMPACT CRATER ON THE MOON This crater is 222 m (728 ft) across, and formed in spring 2024. Statistical modelling tells us this is a 1-in-132 year event. So the last time a crater this big formed on the Moon was 1894.
A large crater with bright rays is situated in the centre of this image. The dark, pockmarked lunar surface makes up the background.

I was invited to write up a short blogpost for the Planetary Geomorphology Image of the Month based on our recent JGR Planets paper! We make the case that some of the highlands on Venus have borders that form in the same way mountain belts on Earth do: planetarygeomorphology.wordpress.com
An oblique view from Google Earth looking approximately east, from around the location of Bourg-en-Bresse towards Geneva, which is situated at the eastern end of the crescent Lac Leman at center left. The Jura foothills in the foreground correspond to folds in volcanic plains that run parallel to larger folds in tesserae, which in this analogy are the Alps proper.

What struck a xenon atom and triggered a flash of light inside the LZ detector. A particle of dark matter? Too soon to tell. Everyone is looking *very* closely for a second event. 🧪🔭 Full paper available at link: lz.lbl.gov
When a WIMP collides with a xenon atom, the xenon atom emits a flash of light and electrons. The light is detected at the top and bottom of the liquid xenon chamber. An electric field drifts the electrons to the top of the chamber, where they generate a second flash of light. Credit: Greg Stewart, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
