supposedly the city of Hamilton is putting out an emergency contract to repave Dundurn in the fall. I know what you're thinking, the emergency is that kids have to bike like this, but it's only when the road starts affecting people's suspension that we act quickly

I've always thought a quick win for cycling would be to allow two-way cycling on one-way streets, but that it's too straightforward of an idea for the traffic ppl to get behind. turns out Hamilton literally did this for cars, "oh just drive the wrong way here"

unfortunate that the City of Hamilton is planning to narrow this road to put trees, and not bicycle infrastructure. it's the only direct way to get to Westdale [Secondary School for everyone west of JAMES!] that does not involve crossing a highway ramp

I'm a truck route. I'm a cycling route. I'm a combination truck and cycle route 🤦
This road has been designated as both a truck route and rural cycle route in the City’s
Transportation Master Plan. The reconstruction will allow for vehicle lanes and cycle
lanes to be established that are in accordance with current municipal standards.
Reopening this road to through traffic will also allow for the removal of temporary
detours which divert trucks to less desirable adjacent areas

I like to periodically post about how inflexible our "base load" nuclear is in Ontario but it really is good compared to other possible arrangements
a graph showing generation mix in Ontario over the last few days. We see a waterfall graph with coloured bands; two afternoon peaks are visible at around 23 GW, with overnight lows of 20 GW. The bottom third of the graph is dominated by a flat band representing nuclear; above it we see a smaller band of Hydro producing 3-4 GW and taking up a lot of the daily cycle. Above that we see a fairly steady band of gas generation which comes close to nuclear at about 7-8 GW.

The chart is juxtaposed against a chart in another post about the supply mix in India, which is dominated by coal.

one thing I'm feeling pretty good about is that it seems like doing TSP would be a lot easier here than Finch LRT, for a few reasons: * more room for pedestrian islands * the planned space for cars is just way less (most intersections show 2-3 car lanes at most) * Hamilton loves timed lights

it's also pretty annoying to me how the design just assumes the existing fortinos plaza cannot be changed -- meanwhile, many other properties have been expropriated and demolished in case doing so would make LRT construction go smoother. this is what I would do if I was the urbanism god:
A map view of the Fortinos plaza at Dundurn / Main / King in Hamilton, with a conceptual drawing of the proposed LRT. As planned, the transitway turns from King onto Main and has a center stop along the plaza curb; squiggly annotations have been added showing an alternative where the LRT goes through the middle of the plaza, and the parking lot is replaced with mixed use buildings that could include housing, retail, and underground parking for the supermarket.

tfw you make up an arbitrary scoring matrix to guide a design process and then you don't pick the top option
A scoring matrix for different street layout options, ranked across the categories of "technical [feasibility]", "user safety", "[alignment with existing] policies", "accessibility", "urban mobility", "roadway operations", "place making" and "climate change resilience".

A number of options are score, with the lowest at 800 points being. a 4-lane road with truck lanes along the sidewalk, and the top two at 1875 for a protected bike lane with 2-way traffic and one lane of parking narrowly followed by a 2-lane-with-2-lanes-parking at 1800. The difference between the top two is that the top option scores much higher on mobility, while the second option scores a bit more on climate resilience (it accommodates street trees).

another question I have: who at city hall do you have to bribe to get *two* driveway accesses across a multi-use trail? this is a stupid design error; we need to learn that you can just say "no, that's unreasonable and it's too bad for you that living next to a multiuse trail has some compromises"
A driveway abutting a multiuse trail at Kenilworth mountain access, where the trail makes a gradual left turn around a corner lot. The placement of traffic signal and corner forced the driveway to shift over several feet, adding an s-bend to the driveway; to compensate for this, a second access was added so the homeowner can enter the intersection on either side of the traffic light.A driveway access across a multi-use path.

I of course have some complaints: why does every. driveway. interrupt. the. grade?! this makes cycling uncomfortable and snow clearing difficult, for no measurable benefit; it's 100% using cycling infrastructure to serve drivers. in other spots, they have to bump over a curb:
A multiuse cycle track crosses a driveway. although it's typical for Hamilton driveways to bump over a curb, the entire path drops down to accomodate a perfectly smooth driveway for the homeowner.A freshly repaved road with a driveway access; whereas in other cases driveways have been cut through a multiuse path making it bumpy and uneven, here there is no path or sidewalk and the driveway has a bigger curb at the end which the homeowner would have to bump up over.
