I’ll say something you’re not used to hear: It does NOT cost more to make games today. We just make bigger ones. Hear me out. I'm not gonna pretend budgets haven't risen, of course they have. We talked about it in our previous article (newsletter.hushcrasher.com/p/did-games-...). 1/4

I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna start calling game teams "kei" and "midi" and not "iii" or "indie" and you're gonna hate it but I'm right to do it, until we have better terms, sorry bro, this is not discourse, this is praxis newsletter.hushcrasher.com/p/taxonomy-o...

By the way, what’s a AA?
Instead of fuzzy labels like 'indie' and 'AA', we propose a new data-driven system to classify video games based on their actual production scope. This new framework reveals the real economic and creative trends shaping the video game industry.

Devs/publishers, stop trusting Steam recommendations to set your game regional prices. They haven't been updated since 2022. And it’s actively COSTING you sales. Good news is, we fixed it! We detail how in this article: open.substack.com/pub/hushcras...

How much does it cost to make a video game?
We built a model to estimate the budget of 100,000 games. Here's what we found.

Why "Kei" you may ask? The term sparked a long debate. "Mini" felt misleading, potentially confused with minigames, and carried a "lesser value" connotation. Same for "Tiny", "Micro", and "A-". "Solo" didn't fit 2-3 person teams. Plus, we're two weebs ⛩️

Hi Liam, I’m one of the author. Thanks for taking the time reading our paper. Could you explain further your critic? The COP-Kmeans was more of a robustness check and doesn’t change much the results, the F1 score is 0.997 when comparing the kmeans with cop-kmeans

Another issue with bias would be the changes in crediting practice over time. This is hard to adjust for, because you don't know if credits increase over time because games are more complex or because you're crediting people who might not have been credited before.

My biggest fear (for classification purposes) is not so much that the credits are biased, but that the bias would be different between categories. For example, if 10% of workers are not credited for all games, this would bias the raw measure but not change the resulting classification.

I love this analytical take on video game categorization from Antoine Mayerowitz and Julie Belzanne: hushcrasher.substack.com/p/taxonomy-o... Instead of trying to vibe-intuit the definition of an "indie" game, the authors analyzed the data from the perspective of game size and credits length
A graph titled Scope of video games according to Hushcrasher Classification System. The Y axis shows Game Size (from 10 MB to 100GB), the X axis shows Credits count (sourced from Mobygames).

The clustered dots on the graph represent 4 distinct scale categories of games - Kei, Midi, AA, AAA. The larger correlation between the size and the credits means larger category of a game.

Still, large publishers generally invest in larger projects (with larger teams), hence it's not so much a problem. Whereas for playtesters and special thanks, this relationship is not monotonic. 3/3

For playtesters, the issue is we have some big outliers, with some games having dozens of (unpaid) playtesters that skews the credits. There are other issues of course, like publishers including all their staff in the credits of a game even though the team is ridiculously small. 2/n

I totally agree with you. We took this decision because those two categories generally added more noise than signal. One example: crowdfunded games include the backers in their special thanks, which adds hundreds (even thousands) of unwanted names, unrelated to the amount of work in the game. 1/n

People talk about "indie" games, AA, AAA. But no one agrees on what those really mean. With @juliebelzanne.bsky.social we went down the rabbit hole and used a data-driven approach to provide a definitive answer. hushcrasher.substack.com/p/taxonomy-o...
