Unfortunately, SynthID can only be verified through Google's Gemini. Which is indeed a bummer. They didn't provide any other tool to access it. I agree it doesn't look good, that's just how Google decided to set up how to verify SynthID.

Quite note here that for the witch hunt in question, the PFP of the person that we labeled carries the SynthID watermark from Google's Gemini. All images generated by Gemini now carry an invisible watermark that survives light edition. You can learn more here: deepmind.google/models/synth...

I hope this sort of explanation helps people understand our processes. Of course, we can't describe every single image and determination like this, it'd take too much work on an already pretty exhausting process. But I figured since we just recently relaunched, it may be beneficial. Stay safe! 6/6

The compounding of clues between no reputable source for this video and the inaccuracies in craters makes us believe this is fake, hence the label. Long story short: it takes us lots of time and effort to make our determinations, and we are always happy to be proven wrong with new data. 5/6

In addition, there are many weird artifacts in the video. It's a bit difficult to describe, but the "wavy rivers" effect in these shots is this. By itself, this could be caused by upscaling. But in the context of the other defects, this is yet another factor in the determination. 4/6

But more importantly, doing an overlay of this "Moon" over the actual one shows dramatic errors. Significant craters like Reinhold's are missing (circled red), while smaller craters remain clear. And there's some new ones, like the massive one next to Sinus Iridum (circled orange) 3/6

An impact of this magnitude would probably have made at least some news, but we've uncovered no reputable source for this video. This is one big red flag when it comes to this sort of event. A singular video coming out of nowhere with no source, date, nor information is suspect by nature. 2/6

We have decided to label this post as "Suspected AI Imagery". Here's how we came to this conclusion, as an example of our process. It takes time and effort, and we try to make our due diligence as much as possible. First, there is no known source for this video. No news coverage. 1/6

At the end of the day what people keep asking for is the ability to know when something is or is not AI so they can make their own informed choices about how they interact with it. Hopefully tools like SynthID become widespread so it doesn't fall on the user to make their own determinations.

Sampling of some of these tools, in no particular order, on the same image. Using these is virtually the same as tossing a coin.

We've updated so that you can now also make appeals directly through our query page! query.aimod.social Of course users can also still appeal through Bluesky by clicking on the tag in question and then "appeal."

Pushed some changes to make it more clear that an accepted report means being on a list.

The lists and the reports are the same thing. If a label is applied to your account, you're on a list. If you're on a list, a label has been applied to your account. There should be a fairly prominent "Appeal this" once you log in regarding the ancient report you're talking about. Click it.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPDATES! Thank you for your patience, everyone. Yes, we are back.
Hello everyone!

Sorry we’ve been gone so long, we know you all have missed us. Your support has meant a lot to us, truly.

As some of the more perceptive of you have noticed, we are back up! We need a little time to crank up the engines again, but we’re moving as fast as we can.

First, to address some concerns: No, we weren’t banned, and no we weren’t in any trouble. We paused the service ourselves, and it was always meant to be a temporary hiatus. It just took a bit longer than intended.

To put it simply, AIMod had gotten a lot bigger than anyone on the team ever thought it would. We decided that we needed to take a breather and figure out how to best address some of the concerns we’d been hearing from the community as well as implement some extensive technical overhauls.

In short, we put things on hold while we made some big changes under the hood.Updates:

In pursuit of complete transparency, we have added a ton of information to our handbook about who we are and how we work. There is also now an extensive section on AI detection for anyone who wants to know what methods we use to make our labeling choices.

We have added a query system so you can check if you have any AI labels on any post on your account, all without subscribing to the service.

Our honorable founder, @davis.social, has stepped down from their role and will no longer be taking an active role in running the service. This is an amicable departure - he just has a lot on his plate and, to be completely honest, people were being very mean to him.We are still actively updating our mute lists, a process we were in the middle of doing when we shut down ten months ago and can only be done when the service is running. Apologies again if anyone suddenly gets added to a list for a profile picture they had almost a year ago. Just send us an appeal and we will correct it ASAP.

If you are uncertain of how to file an appeal, there is a full overview in the documentation linked in our bio.

Hey everyone! 👋 I want to share an update on @aimod.social:
Thank you to everyone who put your trust in the @aimod.social labeler. Your support means the world to me and the whole team. The project is officially restarting, but I am stepping down from my role.

While I had an amazing team alongside me and the work we did felt fulfilling and meaningful, being the primary public face took a toll. Between the massive time commitment of moderation and the stress of navigating disputes over mistaken labels, I realized it is time for me to step back and focus on other projects.

As a team, we collectively decided to pause the labeler recently. We needed that time to overhaul our methods and revise terminology to ensure the project is done right, better serves the community, and protects the people who give so much of themselves to keep @aimod.social operational.

The labeler is in great hands with the same amazing team. I can’t express enough just how incredible they are and how dedicated they’ve been to protecting and informing the art community. Please keep an eye out for an official update from the @aimod.social account! (side note: they will likely need more volunteers soon, too!)

I am passing the baton and stepping away from project duties, but I'll always be rooting for them.

Thank you all for the support. ❤️

—Davis

Hey @aimod.social users 👋 I’ve seen the messages about the labeler and wanted to say the team is ok and we’re so grateful for how much it meant to you. We’re sorting some things out and can’t share details yet, but the plan is still to bring it back. Thanks so much for the support—more updates soon.

Hey all, the team and I at @aimod.social are temporarily shutting down the labeler. I can't go into detail, but we discovered issues that could put me or the team at risk. We'll bring it back once we’re confident it's safe. Thank you so much for your understanding and for believing in us.

Right, sorry, I misread what you meant. I... went and checked the API. It... might be doable... I'm wondering if I shouldn't just... do it... It'd work the same way as the listification app, where you'd follow the bot, and it'd DM you for labels... ... ugh, like I need an nth project to do. Hmf.

Detail about that last point: it doesn't tell you when your account gets labeled, it tells you when it's added to a list. There is currently no tool whatsoever able to notify you when a label is applied to an account, nor a post. WHICH IS PAINFUL, let me tell you, even for us. @bsky.app please!

I agree with you, but never ever getting false positives is near impossible, especially with how AI works nowadays. We try our best to prioritize appeals, so labels don't appear for too long. Silver lining, I know. I may help that most users don't use us to fully block or hide what we label:
Only 33% of our users use our labels to totally reduce visibility.

Volunteer moderator for @aimod.social @antifae.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean exactly with first hour? In this specific case, the post was made on 11/5, and the label was applied a month later, long after the first hour of visibility, and got appealed and removed quickly.

This is unfortunately out of our hands, and this is how Bluesky's moderation system has been built. We're dependent on their infrastructure for moderation that is. I totally agree with you that the label should probably at least say "under appeal". This sort of feedback should be sent to @bsky.app.

Volunteer moderator for @aimod.social @antifae.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
Rhaaaa, why isn't synchronizing...?! I'll go and manually remove you from the list. It's supposed to be in sync with the labels. You had one briefly, before it was removed after an appeal, but bluesky's pipes are just really bad lately... Just woke up, I'll edit the list once I'm on a computer.

When you report an entire profile for one AI image, it forces us to review the entire profile's media history. Doing this causes us more work than is necessary, please report the individual post in this case.

The label was applied in February when you had a different profile picture. I have appealed and removed the label for you, and the list should synchronize itself automatically, but there can be a lag.
