Amid some positive reforms, police are moving to record initial interviews with survivors. It might sound like a good idea, but experts oppose it because the survivor may be in shock and still processing the event. This can increase the chance of the case being dropped and lead to worse outcomes.

‘Anywhere, anytime’: Victoria police and PSOs to get random stop and search powers after Labor backflip
Premier Ben Carroll adopts Coalition’s stance on Jack’s Law, which gives police and PSOs power to randomly search people for knives with metal detectors The Victorian premie has made another policy backflip, announcing a re-elected Labor government would give police and protective services officers the power to stop and search people for knives using handheld metal detectors – despite experts warning of a lack of evidence the measure reduces violent crime. Ben Carroll on Wednesday announced he would match a commitment made by the Coalition opposition last year to introduce Queensland’s Jack’s Law, named after 17-year-old Jack Beasley, who was fatally stabbed in Surfers Paradise in 2019. Not only is it cruel to deny prisoners outdoor recreation time, it's been shown to *increase* recidivism. The Labor government isn't "tough on crime", they're sacrificing marginalised people to keep the rest of us living in fear.

BBC News India has almost 1 million followers, and BBC Hindi has over 3 million. The language is subtle, but when they tell millions of people the police "had to" use weapons against protesters, they present state violence as inevitable, instead of a choice people made, and a system we can change.

Building weapons to be used in genocide = not terrorism Trying to stop that genocide = terrorism Even though nobody was hurt, by labelling these activists as terrorists the police are able to threaten life in prison - a harsher punishment than most murderers receive.

Note that the report uses a conservative definition of "misuse" ie going against manufacturers' guidlines, attacking journalists, healath workers or children. Whereas we would say that any use of these weapons to defend ICE concentration camps or the genocide in Gaza is "misuse".
