It would be heavy-handed as a satire: a conservative administration cutting bus services to fund loss-making airports for private jets. Yet here we are. (Translation in ALT)
A dead duck
Criticism from passenger organisations –
“This is also a modal shift, but in the wrong direction, towards a complete standstill,” was answered by Minister for Mobility Annick De Ridder (N-VA) earlier this year, citing the improvements that the planned growth trajectory was supposed to bring. Now that this, too, is largely disappearing, De Lijn is left high and dry. “All we’re left with is a dead duck,” says Schoubs.
The fact that Minister De Ridder continues to defend Flemish subsidies for regional airports is not going down well. “That money comes from the same pot as ours,” says Schoubs. “What goes to one cannot go to the other. The government must make choices. We can only take note of them.”

Dode mus

Article 6 of Magna Charter, Ed. They’re just following true English tradition.
From 1066 and All That, a humorous history of England.

Magna Charter
THERE also happened in this reign the memorable Charta, known as Magna Charter on account of the Latin Magna (great) and Charter (a Charter); this was the first of the famous Chartas and Gartas of the Realm and was invented by the Barons on a desert island in the Thames called Ganymede. By congregating there, armed to the teeth, the Barons compelled John to sign the Magna Charter, which said:
I. That no one was to be put to death, save for some reason
- (except the Common People).
2. That everyone should be free - (except the Common People).
3. That everything should be of the same weight and measure throughout the Realm - (except the Common People).
4. That the Courts should be stationary, instead of following a very tiresome medieval official known as the King's Person all over the country.
5. That 'no person should be fined to his utter ruin' - (except the King's Person).
6. That the Barons should not be tried except by a special jury of other Barons who would understand.
Magna Charter was therefore the chief cause of Democracy in England, and thus a Good Thing for everyone (except the Common People).

Everyone is very excited about the Toryeux (AI) Tapestry but with all the rats, migrants and dead white taxpayers it makes me think of nothing more than this crude racist cartoon from the Ellis Island Museum of Immigration, minus the artistic skill.
Cartoon from about 1900. Pied Piper vaguely resembling Uncle Sam leading rats with variously semitic, slavic and other features, carrying instruments of violence and terrorism off the European continent towards the Statue of Liberty while European leaders of various nationalities rejoice.

Enjoying the @lesoir.be interview with Abd Al Malik, the writer and rapper. Particularly this section about his identity, which definitely resonates with me: “my roots are important, but you can’t ask anyone to grow fruit from their roots”. (Rest translated in ALT)
You also strongly emphasise your Alsatian identity…
I’m an Alsatian! Alsace has made me the man I am: it has shaped my sense of discipline and my way of seeing the world.
I grew up in a place where interfaith dialogue meant something. And I very quickly came to see myself as a European. My brother and I played our first concerts in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, before we played in Paris.
In the same vein, I have never defined myself as Franco-Congolese. I am French, European, Alsatian. My roots are certainly African. I cherish them; they are important. All of that is within me. But I mustn’t be expected to let my fruits grow from my roots. Nobody is expected to do that. It shouldn’t be expected of me, or of the rest of us.

I find this odd - not that you're wrong. It is wildly *popular* in the EU. From spring 26, the percentage of people answering "I am for it" to "What it your opinion of the free movement of European citizens to live and work anywhere in the EU"
Results from the EU Barometer 2026. 86% of all EU citizens are in favour of free movement, ranging from 96% in Luxembourg to 77% in Austria

SOIR: At this stage, you want to be useful in the debate - your name wasn’t mentioned during the debate between the five candidates in this primary.

HOLLANDE: Not being a candidate in this primary, it would have been quite paradoxical if they had taken up my propositions. If they had, they wouldn’t have needed to put themselves forward as candidates.

A quick #HeritageDays visit to Les Goujons, a 1975-7 housing development by the Foyer Anderlechtois / Anderlechtse Haard, very well renovated in 2020-25. The entrance halls (Earth, Sun and Moon) have 1975 murals - as yet unrestored - by Edmond Dubrunfaut, details in photos, description in ALT.
Sun: Adam and Eve feel rain for the first time. The equal footing of the couple and the red scarf on Eve’s neck symbolise the struggle for gender equality. Earth: a woman in childbirth and a parent giving a child support to jump. Moon: Einstein along with Rosamund Franklin and others teach the Apollo astronauts. A Saturn V rocket is behind them. There is a line in keep coming back to from Czeslaw Milosz’s “The Captive Mind” (written about art under communism) where he assumes the voice of a frustrated communist functionary, faced with the refusal of society to bend to his rational and logical model of the world.
Why won't the equation work out as it should, when every step is logical? Do we have to use non-Euclidian geometry on material as classic, as adapt-able, and as plastic as a human being? Won't the ordinary variety satisfy him? What the devil does a man need?

EU STAFF ON THE MOVE
Brussels' Northern Quarter after national capitals approved the rental of new office space earlier this month. That's unlikely to be
reluctant to swap Schuman for the gritty Quartier Nord.
Leading by example: The EU's own running costs have attracted
budget, with EU governments heaping pressure on the Commission to save money.
The EU executive insists that it is tightening its belt. A Commission official said it is delivering on its promise to cut office space by a quarter between 2021 and 2030. Three EU agencies
Quarter, with others set to follow suit.
The Belgian authorities have encouraged moving some EU buildings outside of Schuman to gentrify poorer neighborhoods.
During a meeting of EU government officials earlier this month, the Belgian representative dismissed concerns around the Northern Quarter's safety, noting that several Belgian government departments are based there.
Cristiano Sebastiani, president of the Renouveau et Démocratie trade union, slammed the move north as "entirely unjustified." He told Playbook: "The health, safety and security of our staff must, now more than ever, remain the institution's first priority."
