Writer friends! The AI-generated email scams targeting authors are getting more sophisticated. I got one today w/ a real editor's name on it, which could be very convincing to someone who doesn't know how actual editors communicate, so I annotated it to highlight red flags. Spread the word, ok?
Photo shows an email that reads:

From: Allison hunter Hill <allisonhunterh@gmail.com>
Subject: Loved the storytelling in Disaster on the Titanic

Message Body:
Hi Kate,

I recently read *Disaster on the Titanic (Ranger in Time #9)*, and I really appreciated how effectively you combine historical detail with fast-moving adventure in a way that feels both exciting and emotionally grounded for young readers. The tension builds naturally throughout the story, and Ranger’s perspective adds a unique warmth and accessibility that makes the historical setting especially engaging.

I’m Allison Hunter, Senior Editor at Nosy Crow US, where I’m currently building a focused list of character-driven, voice-led middle grade fiction. Your work aligns closely with the kind of immersive, emotionally resonant storytelling I’m actively looking to develop for young readers.

I’m reaching out because I’m reviewing a small number of upcoming projects over the next couple of weeks. I’d love the chance to see what you’re working on next or learn more about any new middle grade adventures you may be developing.

If you’re open to it, I’d be glad to connect through your agent.

Warm regards,
Allison Hunter
Senior Editor
Nosy Crow US

It's annotated in red to highlight the following:
Not sent from publisher email.
Weirdly formal opening paragraph - this is AI voice.
Strange that introduction didn't come first.
What does the sentence about "reviewing upcoming projects" even mean?
Offers to connect through agent - but has already reached out directly. ?

All text - Imprints: Tucker Carlson Books
Skyhorse Publishing will launch a new imprint with media host Tucker Carlson. The imprint is a partnership with Carlson's media company, which has a revenue sharing agreement with the publisher, according to the WSJ. Carlson and his business partner Neil Patel "also launched a precious metals company and a nicotine pouch company."

The first list will include Russell Brand’s How To Become a Christian In Seven Days, Milo Yiannopoulos’ Ex Gay, and Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong's Killing Cancer. Brand's literary agent and previous UK publisher, Bluebird Books dropped the author due to sexual assault allegations. Brand faces rape and sexual assault charges, which he has denied, in the UK.

Simon & Schuster canceled a book by Yiannopoulos in 2017 after a video surfaced in which he seemed to express approval for grown men having sex with underage boys; Yiannopoulos eventually self-published.

All text - Hello,

I hope you’re having a great week.

My name is Megan Tingley, and I serve as President and Publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers at Hachette Book Group. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with authors and illustrators to bring meaningful, engaging, and impactful stories to young readers, particularly in areas of young adult fiction, suspense, and imaginative storytelling that blends emotion and intrigue.

I recently came across TITLE OF BOOK, and I was impressed by your skillful weaving of suspense, romance, and supernatural elements within a small-town setting. Character name's journey, balancing love, power, and the consequences of manipulating time, creates an immersive narrative that captures both tension and emotional depth.

Your ability to explore complex relationships, social hierarchies, and the moral dimensions of power while maintaining a thrilling pace demonstrates a clear and confident storytelling voice. The mix of time manipulation, social intrigue, and darker truths enriches the story, providing readers with both excitement and thought-provoking themes about identity, desire, and consequence.

I would be very interested to learn more about your current and forthcoming projects, as well as whether you are represented by a literary agent. If you do have representation, I would be pleased to continue any discussion through your agent. If not, I would be happy to outline how the process typically works, should there be interest in taking the conversation further.

Subject to reviewing additional material, there may be scope for a broader discussion regarding potential fit within Little, Brown Books for Young Readers’ young adult and speculative fiction publishing program.

If this is of interest, I would be delighted to hear from you.

With genuine respect,
Megan Tingley
President and Publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers at Hachette Book Group

I heard a rumor (so take that for what it is) that some authors will withdraw and resubmit their query letters, hoping to get on the top of the query box. Now I can't speak for other agents but I work from the bottom up, so if this is the strategy it might not be as affective as you'd've hoped.

All text - Forthcoming: Taylor Sheridan's 'How Not To Die In Prison'
Simon & Schuster will publish HOW NOT TO DIE IN PRISON, the debut book from Taylor Sheridan, the creator of creator, writer, director, and executive producer of series including Yellowstone, Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, and 1883, on June 23. The book is cowritten with Tom Nelson, who spent 17 years in maximum and medium security prisons. Stuart Roberts acquired NA rights from Anthony Mattero at CAA.

Sheridan notes in the introduction, "You might wonder what in the world gives me the knowledge or wisdom to write a survival guide to prison. Well, I’ll tell you—absolutely nothing. I’ve never been to prison. But, like every man, I’ve certainly wondered how I would survive if circumstances ever put me there. That morbid curiosity sent me on a journey to understand the politics and dangers of prison."

The publisher writes that the book "teaches readers everything they need to know to make it out alive, from how to survive a prison riot, a lockdown, a stabbing, a hit, and solitary confinement to how to get a job, not go insane, make prison ramen, give a prison tat, and (allegedly) make a shiv."

All Text - Reports Detail How Literary Agent Brockman Connected Epstein With Scholars
Several recent pieces have highlighted the enduring link between Jeffrey Epstein and literary agent John Brockman, who connected Epstein with intellectuals, academics, and scientists, a relationship first brought to light in 2019 after Epstein's death. In newly released files, Brockman also discusses Epstein's funding of a conference tied to a book of science essays and the effects of "Me Too" on the industry.

Brockman, "the king of scientific publishing" whose agency is now run by his son Max, was the leading agent for science and tech writers including Richard Dawkins, Jared Diamond, Daniel Kahneman, and Steven Pinker. In The Nerve, Virginia Heffernan—a former Brockman client—describes Brockman's pursuits outside of publishing, which were largely bankrolled by and deeply entwined with Epstein. Epstein was the primary (and in some years sole) funder of Brockman's Edge Foundation, which the agent framed as a nonprofit "intellectual salon" that hosted high-end in-person conferences. In addition to Heffernen, participants included "scholarly idols whose bios have 'Booker' and 'Nobel' in them" such as Ian McEwan, as well as Yuval Noah Harari, and Steve Wozniak.

Brockman also coordinated "Billionaires Dinners," which brought together academics with tech titans such as Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates. As Heffernen reports, "Brockman kept me at a distance. As the latest Epstein files reveal, the token female members of Edge were actively excluded from schmoozing and conferences.... Otherwise, we might have struck up conversations with the anxious-looking teenage girls kept out of the photos. We might have overheard the Edge men praising race science, rape culture and genetic engineering. We might even have asked where the money came from."All Text - The 19th dives further into Epstein and his associates' misogynistic views, as the newest tranche of files contains several claims that women are less intelligent than men. In one email from 2018, Epstein responds to an invite to the "Brockman Conference" on AI, inspired by "the highly influential Macy Conferences of the 1940s and 1950s," and connected to the book POSSIBLE MINDS: 25 WAYS OF LOOKING AT AI that Brockman edited. The conference and book included scholars Alison Gopnik and Caroline Jones:

"the old conferencess did not care about diversity. I suggest you not either. the women are all weak , and a distraction sorry, [sic]," Epstein wrote.

Brockman replied with a defense of the women. "Great minds can disagree," he writes. "The world has changed. This conference is based on a book. Today, it's impossible to get a publisher to buy such a book with essays by 25 men and no women."

Brockman ends his email: "Given your response, I don't feel comfortable moving ahead as planned, taking funding or having you in attendance. And the latter is a serious risk. Today's news on Lawrence [Krauss] shows that Me-Too is not going away; it's growing, it's all-pervasive and we're now in a McCarthy-ism moment on steroids.

"This is all very depressing to me when I should be celebrating a fantastic project. The depressing part is that since we've met you've been my most dependable friend, and ally, the person I know I can always call and talk to and, more importantly, who picks up the phone and calls me and says 'how are you?'"

Epstein ultimately responded that he would fund the conference but not attend. Still, Epstein's sidelining of women, as highlighted in the newest batch of emails, may have had a dark influence on science and academia in the US.All text - "For the boys in the club, the arrangement worked to their benefit. Epstein donated millions of dollars to their research, hosted them at networking dinners at his home, invited them to visit his island or his ranch in Santa Fe, and connected them to potential funders to further their work," the 19th writes.

"As a result, these men were able to establish their own well-funded labs to pursue their work, land lucrative book deals and make connections to other prominent men, particularly those in Silicon Valley who were working on technological advancements like AI."

The Chronicle of Higher Education interviews historian M. Syd Rosen, who is working on a biography of Brockman. They report that Rosen interviewed Brockman five times in 2022 for the book, but unfortunately, "Brockman agreed to the interviews on the condition that Rosen not ask about Epstein." Rosen does discuss the agent's ties to the financier with the Chronicle.

In 2011, Brockman forwarded an email from Dawkins to Epstein. Dawkins complains that an article written about Lawrence Krauss's defense of Epstein is a "witch hunt." Brockman's email to Epstein describes "a campaign against our friend LMK re: his friendship with you."

"We don’t know what we don’t know," the interviewer responds, "but there’s the obvious implication that Brockman, and to an extent Dawkins, were shielding Epstein."All text - The interview shares information about Brockman's start as an agent, building his client list, and launching Edge. Rosen also refers back to a 2019 New Republic article by Brockman client Evgeny Morozov that first exposed Brockman as "Jeffrey Epstein’s intellectual enabler," connecting him to science and tech "luminaries."

In his piece, Morozov reprints an email from Brockman suggesting that the author meet with Epstein.

"He’s been extremely generous in funding projects of many of our friends and clients," Brockman wrote to Morozov. "He also got into trouble and spent a year in jail in Florida."

Brockman also recounts how he visited Epstein and saw the financier with Prince Andrew, receiving foot massages from "two young well-dressed Russian women."

Morozov wrote: "In that old email, it seems clear that Brockman was acting as Epstein’s PR man—his liaison with the world of scientists and intellectuals that Brockman had cultivated. That Brockman has said nothing over this affair is rather bewildering."

Presciently, he concluded, "I am ready to pull the plug on my association with Brockman’s agency—and would encourage other authors to consider doing the same—until and unless he clarifies the relationship between him, the Edge Foundation, and Epstein. If such an explanation is not forthcoming, many of us will have to decide whether we would like to be part of this odd intellectual club located on the dubious continuum between the seminar room and a sex-trafficking ring."

Max Brockman has not responded to a request for comment.
