So much to love about London Tide. The staging and particularly the lighting design were brilliant. What they chose to include/exclude worked well. That said if you don’t like PJ Harvey you might struggle with it!

Super proud of our Edge Hill English and Creative Arts students for responding with a mixture of righteous fury, love, and care to news of redundancies threatening our department! Please share and sign their petition(s)!

Said hello to the Gloucester Candlestick yesterday. Somehow it’s about 11 years since I was thinking about it during my MA. I loved the freedom to think that course afforded me. Happy times
Close up of part of the base of the 12th century Gloucester Candlestick. Its intricate, gilded metalwork human figures and beasts are intertwined. Find it in the V&A

I remember how excited I was by all the options as an undergrad delivered by so many experts, and I wonder what options will be left for my history-loving teen when he gets to that stage

Gutted today as one of my wonderful colleagues worked her last day with us. If you haven’t already got yourself a collaborator/ sounding-board/ co-conspirator/ team-teacher who is a librarian, you should absolutely make that your priority. Librarians make the best colleagues. And friends

I am so delighted that my first post shares a beautiful essay by my dear friend Scott Sandage. For years, I have taught his method to my students. Now I can assign this moving explanation of its history (in his voice) published by @joshrgreenberg.bsky.social commonplace.online/article/how-...

Took some of our PGRs on a writing retreat on a train today! It was the best. We went to Lancaster and met up with PGRs from the Glasgow campus who did a train retreat too. Can’t claim credit for the idea but it was such a lovely day and I would 100% recommend doing writing retreats on a train!

Beautiful day for one of the highlights of the academic year! It’s graduation today and tomorrow and I am delighted to be celebrating with our wonderful GCU London students. This is what all the hard work is for!

This was exactly the break I needed last night. So silly and fun and now I feel recharged and ready to help students write their research projects today.

Found my #19thC spooky story for Halloween. ‘The Phantom Death’ - a shipboard poisoning mystery by W Clark Russell from 1893, illustrated by Seppings West
Black and white illustration titled ‘Oh my God! he exclaimed’. A seated man looks at a standing, wide-eyed man who grips his head with his hands.

The #19thC botanical stereographs at the photography centre at the V&A are absolutely worth seeking out.
