This week we confirmed that serotines are a breeding species in Jersey after capturing a breeding female on Monday night. Two bats 🦇 (one male and one female) were fitted with BluBat tags and they both went to the same group of 3 houses, with a total count of 48 bats emerging last night!

Got myself another 🦇 first for Jersey! Barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus) has been recorded acoustically, but this is the first capture of the species. She was an adult female, but did not show any signs of previous breeding. She was tagged under licence using a BlūBat tag.

Final full day of fieldwork trip one for my MPhil yesterday and one of my tagged bats 🦇 is on National Trust Jersey land, so I did a training session for their ecologists so they can keep on roost finding for me whilst the tag has battery life remaining #ecology #fieldwork

As the weather gets consistently cooler and/or more miserable the #bats are tucking themselves away for hibernation. But, unlike bears, they don't typically sleep the entire winter away, typically waking periodically to adjust position, change roosts, or for a drink and snack in milder periods 🦇

On occasion I go and play with things other than bats, today was one of those days. Nice results for this NDMP site with 4 juvenile's in one box, then a breeding female and very late babies in the last box of the day. 🤞🏼 for a mild autumn so they can fatten up sufficiently to survive the winter

All signs are pointing to 2025 being a mast year. The number of nuts trees produce varies each year, smaller crops over consecutive years keep populations of animals eating them in check. In a mast year, they produce more than the animals can possibly eat. We took advantage at the local walnut tree!
