Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 3hI wonder if anyone actually feels safer in a surveillance state… 210
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 3hSeeing all these politicians campaigning right now, talking about investing in the police to “make ppl feel safer” — I’d feel safer walking past a guy shooting up or tagging a wall or panhandling than walking past a cop 🤷 1151
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 3hLMAO honestly I’m impressed how many ppl here got the bit — not because you weren’t articulate and funny, but bc a lot of ppl online are so keyed up and defensive (from The Horrors, I presume) they can’t resist a worst-take read on everything 020
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 4hThat sucks! I don’t drive either but I’m lucky enough to live somewhere pretty walkable. 110
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 4hI moved to a town where I don’t know anyone and I’m very extroverted and also weird, so I had to get really intentional really fast 010
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 4hI genuinely feel like the trick is getting people to a second location as soon as possible 😂 I host game names: chatting with a stranger, they mention they like games, BAM invitation. I go to a community event, it wraps up, I toss out to the group “Anyone want to grab a pint?”. 210

Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 4hI like the Creature role! Depending on the mechanics, maybe that could be the house itself 010
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 4hYeah, I’ve run haunted houses before, but I don’t wanna GM, I wanna play AS the haunted house 110
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 14hI just watched The Love Witch (2016), and this might be a perfect film. 1160
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 21hYeah, that’s why I was being silly saying “every single ttrpg player wants to tell a good story”. Most players probably don’t consciously have that goal in mind. I think, if they did, they might have more fun, but idk to each their own. But thats way less fun as a response to a manifesto. 150
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 22hFor sure, but the ttrpg is generating the story, which is being shared with an audience beyond the table. I know the draw to AP isn’t the same as draw to the story, though. We love a non-fiction AP 🫡 100
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 22hIt’s hard to have these conversations over micro-blog bc I feel like we’d need to define every term and cross-reference game experiences. Listening to your description, I’m thinking of games I’ve played like that and honestly? kinda bland. But idk if thats the kind of game youre referring to. 110
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 22hI always wonder how Canada got a reputation for being polite bc Vancouverites‘ primary character trait is exhaustion 120
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 22hIdk man, that sounds like a bummer to me. you only get the thrill of storytelling afterwards?? That’s skipping the best part! I don’t want to rely on retrospection — I want anticipation, investment, the satisfaction of threads winding together. I want arcs and motifs and callbacks and TWISTS 🤩 220
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 22hYeah, I know. I don’t understand that perspective at all, but I’m well aware it exists. I think of ttrpg as storytelling games, and whenever I’m at a table that doesn’t share that perspective I get so bored me teeth hurt 😅 010
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 15/10/2026And if people disagree, thats because they are wrong* Or don’t want games to be story-shaped, which I maintain is truly bizarre bc telling stories seems like the most basic human instinct and main reason to play ttrpg as opposed to like, chess. Also stories are fun! Remember the campfires! 160
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 15/10/2026While you can tell a banger story ~by accident~ from “actor stance” (🤢) or pawn stance (🫳), it requires lighting in a bottle or, more likely, a GM carrying the whole narrative on their back. and I love collaboration that is consistently awesome. So little sprinkles of author stance for all! 160
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 15/10/2026I’ve played a lot of games with a lot of people and everytime people leave the table like “holy shit that was incredible, I am changed”, it’s bc we told a banger story. No one experiences an epiphany from loot! Effective use of game mechanics never made someone gay! which is of course the real goal 180
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 15/10/2026I maintain that micro-dosing author stance is the best path (objectively correct way to play games 😉) since every single ttrpg player wants to tell a good story, finds joy in telling a good story, and can easily get in their own way if they aren’t at least taking homeopathic author stance 141
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 15/10/2026Heh I think that your framing of pawn stance is largely just “remembering that there are real humans at the table, and not sacrificing reality on a diegetic altar”, which I agree with but don’t find useful as a position from which to play a game. I know some ppl need to hear it, though. 170
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 15/10/2026(I instantly have the urge to hedge the previous statement and theres my hecking problem) 0130
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 15/10/2026Low-key, I’m so exhausted by the constant hedging on social media that having someone share a strong, absolute opinion is actually refreshing. I mean, i disagree, but I am refreshed. 3281
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 14/10/2026I also want to emphasize that I don't think cinematic AP is inherently better. Film always prioritizes audio and visual over other senses, glosses over interiority, and struggles with ambiguity in a way that I think novels handle much better -- APs can be more poetry or novel-like. Good soup. 060
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 14/10/2026One thing that hit me about how Cameron produced How's My Driving was the use of jump cuts instead of sticky-cams -- a production decision that instantly made it feel more movie-like. But I think shows can feel cinematic without that level of production. 170
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 14/10/2026The production layer, in my mind, can't make a show cinematic unless the story already is, but it can emphasize the movie-ness through things like scoring, SFX, colour-grading, strong visuals, editing, etc. Moving the show from 'buds playing a game' vibe to 'improvised screenplay' vibe. 150
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 14/10/2026I think the second, broader sense overlaps with theatre, but I haven't seen much theatre so it's not the analogy that comes to mind. I use a lot of screenwriting terms when talking about AP, but I'm not sure to what extent that contrasts with theatre and/or audiodrama. 160
Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 14/10/2026In the most literal sense, it's using film terms in narration. Describing camera movement, cuts, slow motion, colour grading, stuff like that. In the broader sense, it's narratively structuring a game like a movie (as opposed to a dungeon crawl or a novel) + using 3p limited (avoiding interiority). 1100

Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 13/10/2026In Canada, Thanksgiving is a harvest festival with much less colonial connotation than the American one, which is nice. It's also pretty low-key. Gnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 10/10/2026I think about this all the time. Sometimes finding joy is just getting out of your own way, taking a beat to put aside all the complexities of living, and simply existing, just for a moment. 0181

Reposted by Gnome AnneGnome Anne @annethegnome.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I’ve noticed a prevalent myth in the AP space that once you reach a certain threshold of success, it gets “easier”. I think this is actually a pretty dangerous myth, bc it encourages small creators to burn themselves out, work unsustainably, in hopes of reaching a magical land of ~easier~. 🧵 716230
