And as always, you can look to local organizations to find ways to directly support causes you care about. This could look like mutual aid groups (check out www.mutualaidhub.org), checking in with your neighbors, sharing your unique skills, community service, running for office, and more

The No Kings organizers have highlighted the need to both block AND build: BLOCK by taking concrete action against authoritarianism NOW; and BUILD by building LONG-TERM organizing power. I'll call out examples of both from the site in this thread (but please also check out the site!):

Spitting FIRE holy shit 🔥
A series of tweets from Politico senior legal affairs reporter Kyle Cheney:

BREAKING: A federal judge in Massachusetts (the Reagan-appointed William Young) has declared the Trump administration's cuts to NIH grants — ostensibly over Trump's EOs on gender ideology and DEI — are "illegal" and "void." He's ordering many grants restored.

YOUNG: "I am hesitant to draw this conclusion, but I have an unflinching obligation to draw it – that this represents racial discrimination. And discrimination against America’s LGBTQ community. That’s what this is. I would be blind not to call it out. My duty is to call it out."

MORE YOUNG: "It is palpably clear that these directives and the set of terminated grants here also are designed to frustrate, to stop, research that may bear on the health – we’re talking about health here, the health of Americans, of our LGBTQ community. That’s appalling."

YOUNG still going: "I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this ... I ask myself, how can this be?"

"I have the protection that the founders wrote into the constitution, along with imposing upon me a duty to speak the truth in every case. I try to do that. What if I didn’t have those protections. What if my job was on the line, my profession... Would I have stood up against all this? Would I have said, 'you can’t do this?' You are bearing down on people of color because of their color. The constitution will not permit that."

"Have we fallen so low? Have we no shame?"

If you want to dip your toes into @sciencehomecoming.bsky.social’s op-ed writing initiative, you could try writing Letters to the Editor to your local papers (~150-200 word short pieces) on timely issues that matter to you! Here’s an example of an LTE on academic freedom from me
Letter to the Editor: Academic Freedom

The Trump administration is attempting to bully higher education into submission, by using intimidation and threats to dictate what can be taught (and who deserves a seat at the table). Harvard has decided to take a forceful stand for academic freedom, and several other colleges are now following suit. The University of Pennsylvania must do the same. As a scientist, I’ve learned firsthand how fundamentally valuable it is to listen and learn from diverse perspectives in the pursuit of knowledge. If the administration truly had the country’s best interests in mind, it would be actively fostering an environment where conflicting viewpoints can be boldly shared and constructively grappled with.Instead, they are threatening universities to close their diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and demanding an “audit” of student perspectives. This will only stifle free speech and force out some of our brightest talents, not make campuses safer. But of course, trampling on free speech is their end goal. So now is not the time to bend a knee in the hopes that things will blow over. Now is the time for universities (including Penn) to take collective action in defense of higher education.

More 5 Calls content ideas added to the Drive 😸 this time the focus is on boiling issues down to 1) What's the bad thing happening; 2) What will the real impact be; 3) What can you call about. Hopefully will help catch people's attention quickly about the stakes! drive.google.com/drive/u/3/fo...
Flyer with 2 by 2 grid, each box containing an issue explainer and call-to-action, with a 5 Calls QR code. All QR codes in the grid go to different pages from the 5 Calls website. You can use the following bit.ly to access 5 Calls: bit.ly/act-5calls

Box 1 is an intro, that reads: STAND UP FOR DEMOCRACY. NOT SURE WHAT TO CALL YOUR REPS ABOUT? HERE IS A FUN COLLECTION OF IDEAS (also a picture of a thumbs up meme cat).

Box 2 contains Notes, that read: To learn more about any of the issues in this booklet, check out 5calls.org. Your calls make a difference! Speak on one issue per call & they will tally each - you can call as many times as you like! For daily updates on issues + more actions, follow Rogan’s List (QR code goes to bit.ly/act-daily). If you want to download and print any of these materials, you can find them all here (QR code goes to https://drive.google.com/drive/u/3/folders/1vDpI2vVEoqikybvN80PdREVdChEE68Gi)

The final 2 boxes are issues explainers (with emoji icons for an angry face, a warning sign, and a phone), that read as follows.

Box 3: HEALTHCARE. PROTECT MEDICAID. Republicans want to cut Medicaid to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. Cutting Medicaid will especially harm healthcare access for children, people with disabilities, seniors, and lower-income Americans. Oppose Medicaid cuts.

Box 4: HEALTHCARE. SAVE SCIENCE FUNDING. Trump is cutting critical research funding to NIH and NSF. Scientific innovation will be seriously damaged, meaning fewer medical treatments will be developed. Oppose NIH/NSF cuts.
