This video explains why I see so many people in my clinic with chronic diseases. Doesn’t have to be that way.

It seems not a single person in Washington State has a good thing to say about Puget Sound Energy’s requested 29% rate increases. At the public hearing in Lacey tonight. Packed room and a line out the door for testifiers.

Men on bikes explain things to me. Today man on bike behind me said it was “bad form” to overtake him & then slow down on a residential street (as I came to an intersection). Love these tips!

The most confusing intersection I know. There are multiple conflicting laws here. White STOP lines and warning indicate vehicles must yield. STOP sign for bikes and walkers saying they must yield. Medina man in 8000lb SUV tells me just now I must yield because he is bigger. Watch out kids!

More than half the street for people walking & biking. These are ideal proportions for safety. Ideal for all ages. Should be the model for rest of Seattle.

Speed is a factor in hundreds of collisions on our streets each year. Speeding makes crashes more likely to occur and do more harm. A person is twice as likely to be killed if they are hit by someone driving 30 mph than a driver going 25 mph. Illustrated graph from @propublica.org:

Rather than seeing patients downstream in my clinic, this universal school food program targets upstream using public policy to improve not just kids but community well being. Well done to Mayor Wilson.

Urbanist Philomena Cunk. In America, jaywalking makes it illegal to stand on the Earth in the wrong place, just in case a Chevrolet needs that exact spot. It is the only crime where the primary punishment is being instantly run over by the victim.

His arm was amputated from the elbow up. But he still passed me today on his bike going across Lake Washington toward Bellevue. Makes me doubt that tired argument that people with disabilities need a car.

Met a mother from San Diego with 2 small kids at coffee shop in Seattle. What she said surprised me. She hates driving but she lives in a city that requires her to drive everywhere. Would be nice if we didn’t force young mothers to drive but instead give them transportation choices. Seattle too.

“The EPA is now routinely determining that the benefits of reducing air pollution—that is, life-saving health benefits for Americans—are too uncertain to quantify or value at all in regulatory decisionmaking.” In other words, they’re lying and gaslighting us. I find that infuriating, not “boring.”

We can prevent traffic deaths. We choose not to. Just imagine if chlorination of public water didn't happen in the early 1900s. We wouldn't have prevented 500,000+ deaths 1910-1930. Then naysayers said the costs were too high, or that individuals needed to pay more attention to boiling water.

When you go a little deeper with neighbors like this who don't like people biking, turns out they also don't like bus lanes. Or new housing, or how people water their plants. Thankfully, they are in a minority.

Hard to see this when resources and communities in Eastern WA and OR are already stretched thin dealing with existing fires. Large swathes of Washington east of the Cascades face a “Particularly Dangerous Situation” with this Red Flag Warning - rare, dire language from the NWS.

Harborview staff would prefer to see fewer gunshots. Level 1 trauma centers were created in San Francisco in the 1960s to fill a void created by failed government policies. Trauma staff are amazing. But many health professionals would like politicians to try harder.

This surgeon’s opinion piece on Waymo saving lives is odd. Using Waymo’s own dataset is fraught with risks. Is it accurate? Does it cherry pick ideal conditions? The doctors who found the link between cancer and smoking in 1950 did not use the dataset from Imperial Tobacco. They used their own.

Bob Kettle told me slashing the tax is about "affordability". Patients cannot rely on bus service to get to a doctor's appointment on time in his district to Virginia Mason. Some have to use Uber at $25 one way - what the Mayor's tax would cost households for an entire year! Yes we can afford this.

A "lack of preparation," "improvisation" and "makeshift solutions" from government officials on excessive heat. Seeing exact same thing in WA State. Legislators failed to move a bill this year that would require every county to have a plan for heat & avoid mass casualties. Hope 2027 is better

Every street, every crossing in Seattle should be designed with these kids in mind. Just watched them scoot over an arterial on a crosswalk. I held my breath until they were out of harms way. I’d like better street design so we don’t have to hold our breath at crossings.

Cooling prevents very sick people from overwhelming our emergency services and hospitals. Once that happens the whole system breaks down and people die from all sorts of other things that are preventable. Everyone should have a plan for access to one cool room in their home.

What might famous military commanders say about Seattle streets? They were obsessed with small things. Like pairs of shoes so men could walk. If only our planners were as obsessed over small things at the block level i.e. is it safe or pleasant to walk here. Then more communities would thrive.

I understand this driver. Everything is an obstacle when you’re behind the wheel. You don’t see the small kids walking to school. Cyclists have a lower social status & need to move out of your way. On a bike or walking you see the sound & color of everything. There is no rush. No obstacles.

Why is this vehicle a problem? From 2022-2024 in WA, turning drivers killed 19 pedestrians at signalized intersections. One quarter were in Seattle. Most drivers were in large vehicles like SUVs Since the driver didn’t see the No Right Turn on Red, let’s start by making all these turns illegal.
