issue #6 of Monkey, the mag of new translations of Japanese fiction, has a banger of a translation of the popular & creepy story "The Human Chair," by Edogawa Rampo, w fab translation by Jeffrey Angles. The translator's note clears up some wild glitches in the older translation--very recommended!!!

TIL that there is a Head of Convenience Wear at Family Mart. The media mix now includes socks! I have definitely bought socks at Family Mart.

FamilyMart’s sock became a prized souvenir. Now there are 47.
Modeled after each region’s official flower, the commemorative socks expand on the convenience store chain’s popular line of casual wear.

media mail is of course good and cheap to anywhere, but the extra anti-frustration function of not having to plan to drive to the bookstore is so worth it. I love Skylight, and Los Feliz, but the traffic and parking can be a real time hog. Plus they are super nice and respond to email on a dime.

LA folks, in this season of bookbuying, Skylight is an excellent bet. Their Friends w Benefits program is $55 for 2 years. It gets you 10%+ off books, all the media-mailed books you can eat, & no need to drive yourself nuts by parking in Los Feliz. It's good to be located across the st from the PO!

The procurement process is a real weight too. No longer can you go to a big box store and buy a laptop on sale, at a significant discount (w research $), and put your own software on. You have to buy it through a lavishly expensive contractor, through IT whose priority is security software. Madness.

OMG, I got to the end of the article that made me realize why I hate this style, and it said, at the very end, that it was written "structurally" with AI!!! Advisors, don't let your babies do this!

I wanna see you read that motherf*ckin poem! Drench me in language, tippy-toe through the stanzas, pause and assess the whoa-ness of it all--interject, object. Read the thing, the evidence, the material you are working through. Show, don't just tell, tho your own telling is important, as well.

It's just super vague, and can be claimed after reading a bunch of summaries. Among the things run over--periodization, local contexts, definitions of concepts, scholarly arguments and holes. It's just so authoritative it says both nothing and offloads all the follow-up work to a reader or editor.

Finally put my finger on why I hate "social sciences" type citation, as the tendency it allows is amped by AI citation practices. Ex: "Consumer culture and food have been embroiled in colonial practices of exploitation since the 1700s" (Mintz). OK, maybe. But this sounds just like book cover copy.

(Reggie Jackson's work on the amazing play Hagoromo first thematized this connection, for me. Once a student did a manga version of the play, which was breathtaking.)

I am again struck at the number of Noh plays about human trafficking. Today's find, Jinen koji, is about a girl (boy) who brings a kimono to a temple to get it blessed, unravelling the story. Hagoromo is also like this, with a feathered cloak as stolen passport of a celestial being. Heartbreaking.

Weird list but someone managed to get DuBois, Toni Morrison & Frederick Douglass in with Faulkner and William James. Varieties of Religious Experience, The Bluest Eye & What to the Slave is the 4th of July is an impressionistic combo, but does put into relief the arc & subtext of the bulk of list.

Excellent question about pension funds, some of which are genuinely massive, like the UC system. The 2016 UC revisions suggest revision downward is very much a possibility. Relevant to people who want to retire, at some point, and live on those funds, and keep the job security for younger folks.

In reality, people submit a lot of apps, and granular reading of tons of scholars' work is time-consuming. But the genre I'm seeing doesn't really give clues about how the grad student sees themselves in terms of a project, a critical genealogy, methods. The stakes of the project are lost in praise.

the shift in the genre of the app essay I am seeing is this: not just a name-check (I see my work in synch with X person) to potted summaries of the entire corpus in very generic terms (your work on filmic space & activism), which could mean a lot of things, but doesn't touch on anything concrete.

getting multiple requests to "put your name on my application" from PhD applicants, with vague AI-ish descriptions of my work. Fine, not great, proposals, consistent wording, mostly Chinese scholars with MAs in the UK. Is this advice on packaging coming from somewhere? No need to ask, just do it!

anthropologist Christine Yano wrote a great piece on "sado-cute," strategic cute users, and more here. www.jstor.org/stable/20619.... (I didn't have to log in to anything.) Her piece and analytic does not fall for the kind of soft Orientalism that Muse and others are peddling.

if only Muse had stolen from the right people, like Christine Yano or Sianne Ngai, who will tell you, in print, that half the meaning of "cute" is its aggression. And the Muse icon is so much closer to kitsch than cute that it is like, right train, wrong track.

I heard an interview with him (Emanuel) on the radio yesterday with that New Yorker guy who was working overtime to humanize him, and "rage" with a "that was then, this is now" framework. Left with the impression that the ghostwriter was doing a lot of the heavy lifting of humanizing.

fascinating story by Frank Shyong about how geo-tagging led to an excavation of immigration history's twining with ag history--and a new cartography, also read by factoring in regulation, i.e. dispossession from LA-area land followed by the ban on "truck farming" after WW2 (only v recently ended).

A new report from the ACLU and Amnesty International USA says universities like the University of California, Los Angeles violated free speech laws and imposed severe punishments on students, faculty and staff who expressed support for Palestinian rights.
The universities' responses "made it easier for the Trump administration to crack down on student activism, causing long-term damage to higher education."
