More from the Naples Archeology Museum. This relief from the tomb of Alleius Nigidius Maius in Pompeii depicts the games held in the amphitheatre (c. AD 70)  and appears to include a lituus player. #HiddenHorn

Another cornucopia (and I'm very tempted to suggest baritone saxophone?) from the Naples Archeology Museum. This is the goddess Isis-Fortuna-Demetra who is depicted with various symbols including the cornucopia signifying abundance. From Pompeii she dates from 45-79 AD. #Hiddenhorn

Back in July I got to visit the astounding collection of the Naples Archeology Museum. I don't normally include cornucopia (as would be over run) but rather liked this one -

Always a sucker for these postal symbol #HiddenHorns - this one was spotted when I was briefly in Ljubljana, Slovenia in the summer.

For those especially interested in historical instruments I'll be performing a piece I discovered as part of my recent doctoral studies plus leading a whistle stop tour through the history of the horn using instruments from the RCS's amazing collection.

A few years back Gabriella and I were chatting and the fruits of that conversation is this beautiful necklace that arrived in the post the other day. I'm absolutely delighted!

Always a pleasure to have the excuse to play this lovely instrument. Very much enjoyed two of my favourite Bach Cantata (BWV 8 and 95) with Bach Winchester Voices (also known aptly as BWV!) yesterday

Wonderful Jennifer Montone was in Stockholm recently playing with the Swedish Radio Symphony and whilst there came across what she (very accurately in my opinion!) described as "fun quasi-horn statues". Aren't they great!

Isn't this striking and eye catching? This was a very generous gift from a talented young horn player - Kandil K. Mohamed - who I met recently. One of the details I love about this is the beautiful background which he explained was painted using tea!

These pieces pose both technical and interpretive challenges, particularly regarding the practical use of mutes on the natural and/or early valve horn. You can read this and all the other fascinating papers here:

In the context of historically informed performance practice, however, this is only half the story. In the past, brass instruments also stood for strong sound, but compared to today they were much less loud. For this reason, it is a central concern of historically informed performance practice and

The conference asked: "What does brass sound like, what do brass instruments sound like? Just loud? This cliché has always accompanied brass players, namely when playing in the context of symphony and wind orchestras, but also in the big band and other ensembles.

I'm really happy to see the publication of "The Sound of Brass", the proceedings of the 2018 Fifth International Romantic Brass Symposium. This was a particularly thought provoking event to be involved in and I found my research for my contribution went in some particularly unforeseen directions!

The opening of Weber's Oberon is very well known to horn players but there's plenty of other exposed sections for us in this magical work - here's the denouement from Act III when Huon sounds the horn, enchanting his enemies into dance. Here's this bit in rehearsal last week.
