Day Three of the Augustine Camino also took us through the first of many Kent apple orchards ... with plenty of unwanted windfalls to sustain us on our journey! 👣🍎

More from Day Two of the Augustine Camino (Aylesford to Doddington). Pilgrim stamps at St Mary's Church, Doddington; walking through the Kent vineyards; and dinner at the Black Horse at Doddington where we stayed the night. 👣

Battle Abbey was built on the site of King Harold's death OTD in 1066. Here is Dougal reflecting on "the spot where King Harold died" close to what would have been the abbey church's high altar.

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings! ⚔️ Some images from last month's visit to Battle Abbey: the Abbey's gatehouse and a Norman knight looking wistfully across Senlac Hill, the site of the battle on 14 October 1066 (with a lone sheep for company!).

Day Two of the Augustine Camino saw us passing the site of Boxley Abbey, now in private ownership. In the late Middle Ages the Abbey was famous for its miracle-working Rood of Grace. The ruins of a few walls remain. Also a barn, once the hospitium, and now being renovated by its owners (image 4).

Two other chapels at Aylesford Priory: St Anne's Chapel (second image) and St Joseph's Chapel (third image). The artwork around the walls is by Adam Kossowski, a Polish refugee.

Artwork by Polish refugee, Adam Kossowski, 'The History of the Carmelites of Aylesford' (1950-1). 1) The General Chapter in 1247; 2) The arrival of the Carmelites in England 1242; 3) The Return of the Carmelites in 1949.

A highlight of our tour of Aylesford Priory - where we stayed on the first night of our Augustine Camino - was the shrine of St Simon Stock. The 13th-century Carmelite (d1265) was buried in Bordeaux. In 1951 the relic (his cranium) was brought to Aylesford, shown here in an impressive reliquary.

Also from Rochester Cathedral, and an appropriate start for the Augustine Camino: the 'Baptism Fresco' by Sergeil Fyodorov (2004) showing St Augustine baptising King Ethelbert and the people of Kent in 597.

Day One of the Augustine Camino began at Rochester Cathedral & a chance to walk up the medieval Pilgrim Steps that once led to the shrine of St William of Perth. He was a pilgrim en route to the Holy Land when murdered near Rochester, 1201. Canonised 1256. The second image shows his modern shrine.

BIG news of the day: in advance of the 2027 relaunch of the revised St Frideswide's Way pilgrimage route, the new SFW map booklet is now out! The SFW is part of the Camino Inglés to Santiago de Santiago and runs between Oxford and Reading where it joins the St James' Way to Southampton. 1/2

During our sojourn in the Scottish borders we also visited a very special holy well. Our Lady's Well at Stow was restored in 2000 but dates to the 5th century (according to Nennius).

Site of the reburied embalmed heart found buried in the Chapter House in a lead container in 1921. Some speculation that it may be the heart of Robert the Bruce though this is debatable.
