No way was it to do with football. We saw the flags when we went through there last week. A deliberate demonstration of (something or other). An utter embarrassment.

Appalling, the open sewer that is Xitter. But it's the hidden cesspits on Facebook that breed the worst infections no one else ever sees - till they erupt.

We must take on the hateful forces that seek to divide us. My statement on recent events in Belfast.
The knife attack in Belfast on Monday was truly horrific. My thoughts are with Stephen Ogilvy and his family, who deserve justice.

Targeting and terrorising innocent people because of the colour of their skin, including setting fire to their homes, has nothing to do with justice or a desire to keep communities safe, however. It is racist mob violence, which has been organised, enabled and whipped up by those seeking to profit politically and financially from hatred, fear and disorder.

Social media platforms who give money and reach to these individuals to promote their hate need to be held to account. They cannot be allowed to continue pouring petrol on the flames.

The disgraceful violence is a direct consequence of the normalisation of vile, racist rhetoric across the UK, which needs to be challenged far more robustly in our political discourse.

I welcome the steps the Prime Minister has taken to work with police and the First Minister of Northern Ireland. We must stand together to prevent further disorder, and to take on the hateful forces that seek to divide us.

For years now, public discourse regarding online radicalisation and hate has focused on Twitter, anonymous accounts and young people. Meanwhile, your uncle is out there sharing memes about great replacement theory on Facebook using his legal name.

...there is no “making it” in poetry. There is only making. Line after line. Draft after draft. Return after return. That is why it is called a practice: because it asks you to come back, with or without witness, with or without reward. - Roger Robinson (who isn't on bsky)

Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty. - Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism 1951 Ht @pkrugman.bsky.social

Michael Billington reporting Christopher Fry (4 vii 05): "I first met Eliot in 1939, and I remember asking him what I could do in wartime that didn't mean shooting people. He suggested the fire service, but I told him that I had no head for heights. Eliot said, 'You must specialise in basements.'"

I miss being on Facebook, where I could share today's discovery that some people use 'kudos' as a plural, as in 'He could earn a few kudos.' There would follow scolding by the usual suspects reminding me that language evolves, innit.

The Carrington event - a Coronal Mass Ejection that came our way in 1859 - caused the electrocution of telegraph operators. One today would wipe out satellites and disable electrical grid systems across the world. We would be sent back to the pre-electrical age. www.hive.co.uk/Product/Stua...

Their appeal is junk because they don't set out the case against you so you don't know what you're appealing against. Much against my better judgment I uploaded some ID - but apparently that counts as my appeal, without any argument from me against the unknown allegation. I await judgement /2

I suspect my offence may have been to link to the archived Obama era White House website and contrast it with the current offering. The algorithm may possibly treat the former as fake, thus 'spreading false news', what with its Spanish option, environmental info, US constitution etc.

Yes, I had to provide some ID, which I felt v twitchy about - but I have many contacts on FB that mean a lot to me, and a lot of info that it's hard to let go, tempting though it is. And I still have no idea what I'm accused of. Nothing I can think of so maybe it's a case of mistaken ID.
