When I got the email I assumed it was a much larger funding gap. This couldn't be closed?? It's not insignificant, but it's also not that huge. More will be wasted on Mayor Her's lawsuits than this.

Finally rode an Urban Arrow yesterday. But Perennial's, not my husband's. Somehow that was less intimidating? I finally managed to not tip it, but ultimately felt way more secure on the Tern GSD so we're probably going with that as our 2nd kid hauler and converting my Tern NBD to adult status only.

So they can "monitor" one Somali kid for 2 years, nurture/exploit tendencies & fail to intervene until after they provide a means to carry out a plan... ...but white kids on 4chan or w/e being radicalized into the most obscure cesspools & writing manifestos & whatnot just... Remain a mystery?

Lots of framing issues here (so many!) and the centering of the parents is...a choice. No digging into how social media algorithms have contributed on the parent side here. Just a "social contagion" among the adult kids.

Differences in housing policy post-Surge couldn't be more stark. Both councils passed a temporary 60-day notice requirement for nonpayment evictions. Minneapolis: the mayor vetoed and council centrists refused to override. On pace for record evictions. St. Paul passed it veto-proof. Down 15% YOY

The University of Minnesota does a lot more than most people probably realize. Basic research - already being cut federally - 4-H, master gardners, transit research, med school, etc. It's more than just a school.

Complaints have limited legal value outside their case, but the one suing for the murder of Renee Good is an important cultural document. It tracks a grand opera of horror and hate that culminated in the death of a woman at the hands of her government. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

COMPLAINT
INTRODUCTION
1.
On the morning of January 7, 2026, Renee Nicole Macklin Good (“Renee”),
a thirty-seven-year-old United States citizen, poet, and mother of three, dropped her six
year-old son off at school, drove home through her own south Minneapolis neighborhood,
and stopped her car in the middle of Portland Avenue. Federal immigration agents were
operating there. They were masked, as was their practice throughout Operation Metro
Surge. Renee honked her horn to warn her neighbors. Her partner got out and began to
film. Renee stayed behind the wheel. She was not the target of any investigation, and she
was breaking no law that any federal officer had authority to enforce. Numerous vehicles,

Whelp, the UA was going to the shop soon anyway to replace the hub after 7k miles. And I need to finally try riding it. Seems like an easy fix, at least. Love the comments about how cool the bike looks. My husband gets that a lot.

I have a Tern NBD and have been debating upgrading to a GSD so I can haul both my kids (which I rarely need to do, but would be nice and probably more frequent next year). And also so I can get a storm box for winter rides. The HSD felt ok, but not as comfy, 2 years ago, so I'm not sure.

I biked to the license bureau when my driver's license was a month expired (whoops). The route kind of sucked because the roads there suck, but it was possible. Not possible at all for many, unfortunately.

Heard about 🧊 in rural Kansas recently, and this joint statement (along with recent statements about imported beef) is fascinating. TBD if it actually changes any minds in November. The beef and dairy industries in particular have been hit hard. www.facebook.com/share/p/1KH6...

I'm now having arguments on these internets about red shirting summer bdays. Someone is so glad they did it and "I've heard it's unfair but life isn't fair and it's not our job to make life fair for kids who may theoretically be in the class at the expense of what's best for our kids." Sigh.

Many people including liberals treat educating their children as a zero sum game where their only obligation is to maximize their kids’ educational advantage, as opposed to thinking of education as a public, social good where the goal is to a decent education for everyone.

The collective decisions of "I want what's best for me (or my kid) and don't much care about how it impacts others" show up with implications in vaccine refusal, charter and private schools, funding highway expansion over transit, etc.

I normally like this author, but this take pissed me off. www.patreon.com/virginiasole... She seems to be equating MAMILs with all bikers, ignoring that, yes, people with disabilities can and do bike especially if we have safe infrastructure, and pits bike lanes against transit.

My oldest kid started Kindergarten today. Even though he went to PreK at the same school I still have so many feelings. Apparently he did, too, as he took forever to fall asleep last night and then got up far too early - dressed for the day before I was up (and I was up early to run).

It can be hard to imagine paying as much as our family has (Urban Arrow and a Tern NBD) for ebikes. Until you realize it allows us to only have one car and rarely drive that one car. Just owning a car is expensive, let alone the gas and maintenance to drive it.

Got a little break between bringing 4-H'ers to media spots to wait in line for apple fries - the one new food I was most excited to try this year. Wait was maybe 15 minutes around 1 pm, and these were delicious. Might get them again before the fair's over.

I noticed it was bigger before it opened but also figured it wouldn't be enough. Luckily many days I get there early enough getting a decent spot isn't a problem, but I had to take off my front rack because it made it such a pain to get out at the end of the night.

So the state fair baked goods entry line is pretty long this year... I haven't had lunch yet and decided to walk here with a wagon vs drive or bike, figuring it'd be smoother than biking and driving always feels silly so close.

My health insurance through the University of Minnesota is going up substantially next year. To the effect of a pretty significant pay cut. My family just moved to this plan and found all new specialists. It's insane, and a very steep increase for one year.

🧵 A few thoughts on the geography of #SaintPaul 's shifting homeless encampments. The Fish Hatchery camp that Mayor Her forcibly cleared this week was on some of the most isolated land in the city, over 2 miles from downtown StP, surrounded by RRs, river, highways, & cliffs.

Reporting shouldn't need to tell "both sides" if there's a more objective truth, in this case the research that shows yes, separated bike lanes are safer. There is no need for "advocates say," except to make it look less valid, when it shouldn't be.

We heard about this one because it was fatal. No way of knowing how many times this occurs and is an injury - serious or not - but not reported. My own bike accident wasn't reported and doesn't show up in stats (my bad, in retrospect). So it may be "rare" to some people, but the risk is not.
