But, isn't the whole joy of IKEA the wandering round the mock living rooms and eating meatballs in the cafe? I thought the buying stuff was just an aside? (Honestly, I love a good wander round IKEA)

Honestly, just been told to download their app for a better delivery experience. Know what would make a brilliant experience? The parcel actually arriving at the right address. I don't want to spend a day tracking a parcel so that I can go and retrieve it. That's just an infuriating scavenger game.

I'm going to predict that home shopping levels are going to seriously drop as we eventually get fed up of pointing out that where they delivered something is not our front door.

I was quite surprised at how quickly she bounced back. So fingers crossed it goes well for you too. But with all things surgical, don't rush back because you think you are doing ok

My Mum had it and the main issue was having to put the drops in. But she wasn't looking at a computer screen all day so less eye strain.

Adds to the 'interesting ethics case study which I'm really glad I'm not having to untangle' . This is why research integrity staff twitch whenever anyone mentions crowdfunding.

They are doing engineering work on the train lines in Fife. Journey into the office this morning has been a bit of a mystery tour of train routes I did not know existed. They've also messed with the timetable. Not that you'd know from the app or the notices at the station (there's a QR code to scan)

I'm confused. English KEF results are out and lots of positive posts about how brilliantly people have done. Indeed, take your joy whilst you can. But I've also seen posts about ranking position but wasn't KEF designed so you couldn't rank? So, has something fundamental changed?

No, I don't know why the 19.57 train from Edinburgh to Dundee doesn't stop at Leuchars either. It goes through it and pretty much every other train stops.

Do state aid rules apply to charities? That didn't get mentioned at all.

Anna Grey @annamgrey.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
But it also seems that all the funding will end up being reported as UKRI funding, even if it is co-funded. That seems a small point, but not helpful if you are looking at cost recovery by funder type, just when it is an important thing to be looking at. Will this also inflate MRC grant figures?

Anna Grey @annamgrey.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Interesting webinar yesterday on MRCs charity co-funding. Seems a sensible idea but does this mean charities are effectively paying the full 80% on grants? Interesting precedent?

I think we worry about where income gets allocated a bit too much and not worry about how costs are applied.

Sorry, what I meant is that with the introduction of the institutional statement for SPRE, 60% of the score for SPRE (old envir section) actually comes from that institutional statement. So that's a whole 12% of the REF income per UoA. I'm pretty sure that money isn't going to go to the REF team.

Anna Grey @annamgrey.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Theoretically yes, though it is about shifts in timing. It's always been the case; lots of examples of units being shut post REF results. But QR is unhypothecated, so it doesn't have to be spent in a UoA that was returned. And with ILS for SPRE, argument that 60% of SPRE should go centrally?

I think there's a simplified explanation floating around somewhere. But it's quite a change and not sure the sector has quite got its head round the implications yet. Most people have only a passing understanding that there is such a thing as a staff HESA return. But happy to help if I can.
020 0
Anna Grey @annamgrey.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's no longer a single date. They are using the FTE returned via HESA, and it's an average over two full years. Sorry, it's not easy to explain the calculation, especially with a limited character limit.
