If the Trump Admin really wanted to reduce homelessness and boost access to mental health and substance use care, it should 1) seek to increase (NOT CUT) funds for low-barrier housing assistance and 2) reverse deep cuts in #Medicaid the president signed into law last year.

For example, HUD is trying to take housing assistance away from at least 97K formerly homeless people, putting them at severe risk of homelessness. The cuts will ripple even wider: whole projects and orgs could close their doors endhomelessness.org/resources/hu...

🧵No one should be forced to sleep outside in a nation as wealthy as ours. Yet, one year ago today, Pres. Trump issued an executive order (EO) calling on federal agencies to abandon effective homelessness solutions in favor of punishing people who have nowhere safe to sleep.

HUD also wants to remove bans on discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation throughout HUD’s regulations, including on rental assistance eligibility. HUD doesn’t explain what this would do, but it could lead to LGBTQ+ people getting denied housing assistance.

Anna Bailey (she/her) @annakbailey.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
Instead, HUD wants to: 1. let - and sometimes require - HUD-funded shelters to turn away trans & nonbinary people or risk losing their $$ even if their state/local laws ban such discrimination. 2. let shelters demand “evidence” of and ask invasive questions about someone’s “sex.”

Anna Bailey (she/her) @annakbailey.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
What exactly is HUD proposing? This rule would end current protections – known as the Equal Access Rule – that require HUD-funded shelter providers to serve people according to their gender identity.

Everyone facing #homelessness should have quick access to safe, dignified shelter & permanent housing. But @HUDgov is proposing a rule that would make it harder and less safe for trans & nonbinary people — who already experience higher rates of homelessness — to access shelter.

Anna Bailey (she/her) @annakbailey.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Policymakers should reject the Admin’s approach, which echoes dark chapters of history, & focus resources on what we know works: low-barrier affordable housing & customized, community-based services. These are proven to help a wide range of people access safe, stable homes.

Anna Bailey (she/her) @annakbailey.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
If left unchecked, the Admin’s homelessness policies could pave the way for massive government-run detention camps that would deprive large numbers of people of basic freedom.

The Admin is: -Promoting cuts to rental assistance, health care, & food assistance; -Pressuring communities to abandon evidence-based approaches to homelessness & adopt less-effective models; -Pressuring communities to fine, arrest, or institutionalize people who sleep outside.

This double whammy would cause more people to lose their homes, undermine people’s basic human rights, and drain local resources. In a nation as wealthy as ours, no one should be forced to sleep in parks, cars, jail, or detention camps because they can’t afford a home.

The Admin is also pushing policies that punish people for not being able to afford a home, like fining, arresting, and jailing unhoused people with nowhere else to go. Punishment makes it harder for people to get services that help them access housing and health care.

The best way to mitigate the harm HUD has already caused is for Congress to renew existing funding, giving communities and formerly #homeless people the stability they need.

HUD’s changes to CoC policy are one part of the Trump Admin’s broader agenda to take away and reduce access to housing assistance at a time when more people than ever are paying more than half their income on rent, leaving little left over for other basic needs.

Anna Bailey (she/her) @annakbailey.bsky.social · 14/11/2025
HUD is forcing CoC grantees(state/local nonprofits)to reapply for funds needed in ‘26 instead of honoring awards announced in January. Grantees have just weeks to grapple with destructive policy changes. The timing alone puts assistance at risk as grantees face long funding gaps.
