Wow. This explains so clearly so much of what I have experienced and am frustrated by in my career. Not being treated as if I bring a value or that the work I do is valuable is crushing. And it takes a huge amount of energy to ignore the slights day after day.

Am in Swindon for a night - if you ever happen to be too, I can now thoroughly recommend the Rockstar bouldering gym, very chill on a Wednesday and satisfyingly difficult setting! Did give myself an almighty shin bruise, but that’s not Swindon’s fault 😅

Consuming an entire chocolate orange and doing very little all evening has helped! Plus, definitely better than getting flu and/or COVID. Paracetamol and bed for me! Have a good weekend!

Had a grant interview *and* my flu & COVID jabs yesterday so I have to remember that I don’t hate everything, I’m just experiencing the predictable aftermath 😅

1. The independent Taskforce — commissioned by NHS England, backed by government — concluded ADHD is under-diagnosed, under-recognised and under-treated in the UK. Not over. The press has reported the reverse of the finding www.thetimes.com/uk/healthcar...

Alas the pancake was floor-bound (it was the last one in the batch, at least). I’m just glad I didn’t smack myself in the face with the much-lighter-than-anticipated pan handle 😅

I asked them all to take one with them and either try to find the person it belonged to or recycle it responsibly - lecture theatre was tidy by the end :)

If I’ve learned anything, it’s to hold on to whatever keeps you going! (On this theme, I also shared a pearl of wisdom passed on to me by esteemed PDRA Dr K when I was an MChem who’d just ruined my reaction: “Nothing Is F**ked”) I was in their shoes 24 YEARS ago which is. Well. Something.

There was a brief moment where I wondered if I should have worn my safety specs, and then it was generally delightful 😁 I did totally slip on one at a later moment in the lecture though 😅 More Risk Assessment Required.

RIGHT so the idea was to get them to write down why they’d chosen to do the course, take a photo, make the paper into a plane, chuck it at me (on the signal). A) for future motivation, b) as an ice breaker, c) to set the scene for the rest of the lecture (intro to scientific method for lab module)

Ran home at lunch as our eldest has an inset day. There are now somehow four 11 year-olds in the house and I am hiding upstairs to work while they direct a zombie movie (??) which appears to require that everything be everywhere. This is my life now isn’t it

The eldest has been reminded to take things out of pockets before putting them in the washing pile, and I have been reminded to fricking check the pockets. (Given I had to extract my wedding rings from the innards of the washing machine twice this week, I’m not very hopeful this will stick)

I am not ready for the abrupt return to work tomorrow, but today’s last minute quest for school shoes with two *exceptionally* pissed-off children (my own) is making it seem more appealing, for which I suppose I am grateful?

I meant to say “if I recall correctly” and somehow it made me type “if I recall recently” - which - well yes I suppose I did recall it recently, I saw it today, but that’s not what I meant dammit!

Also: John, Paul, George and Ringo
Four oil paintings very much not of the four Beatles, but four men of antiquity (if I recall recently, John the Baptist, Homer, Virgil, someone else) arranged in a quadrant and looking like they’re having a massive argument about something no one else would care about

This alert popped up just as I was writing this post. Everything we can do to minimise climate change and *also* to prepare for the environment of the future is worth it. We don't have to hide, or avoid, or wait for others to act - it's much better for us and the future to change things now.
Text message: "Severe Alert
Issued by the UK Government
now
There is a very high risk of wildfires nationally. Residents, landowners and visitors should not undertake any activity that could start a fire, including disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators or fireworks.
Even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire placing lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders at risk.
Follow official updates and report signs of fire immediately by calling 999. Search gov.uk/alerts for more information."

Here, I'm prioritising applicants with experience in flow chemistry and/or automation in a materials or supramolecular chemistry context, and solid-state characterisation of supramolecular materials (particularly crystallography).
