Some news... 1. If We Tolerate This sold just shy of 5,000 copies in its first two months. Thanks to everyone who has read, responded to or shared the book so far. 2. If you haven't yet, it's only 99p on kindle for the whole of October. Get involved! www.amazon.co.uk/If-We-Tolera...
The cover of "If We Tolerate This: How the British Establishment Made the Far Right Respectable", which features the title plus an illustration of a frog in boiling water.

everyone is going insane for this but it's a slop machine. the first character i rolled was a child who died in 5th century BCE Iran and the site generated me a picture of "his home" which had drainpipes and telephone wires. fuck this.

I was 18. When my mum stayed at her boyfriends, I would stay out all night and then get to bed before she got home. That day, having seen the newspaper headlines walking home, I was still fully dressed and standing watching TV. "You're up early?" she said, with suspicion. "Princess Diana has died!"

Dolly was an en-masse fairy godmother. Every person she stood up for, every child given a book, everyone saved by a vaccine. She made people want to Do Better without ever being sanctimonious

I've never actually got all the way through it. As a child I found it... well, childish, and any clip I've seen as an adult seems to have quite a bit of underlying cruelty

In 1982 a zookeeper at the Izu Shaboten Zoo in Shizuoka prefecture accidentally discovered that capybaras absolutely loved soaking in hot water, and the practice of providing them an onsen, or traditional Japanese hot springs, was born. Original post

This is the same old "you can't solve weightlifting with a forklift" thing that happens again and again with current consumer uses of AI: the point of reading a book is not to finish the book easily, it's to READ the book, especially if the book asks you to do something that feels difficult

Not long after buying the album, I also saw "last night's red dress" in a shop window and bought that too. Beth, William and that red dress floated with me through the whole summer of 1998.

William Orbit's mix of Beth Orton's Central Reservation is my favourite ever remix in a crowded field. It takes the one-night-stand regret and yearning of the original and switches it into a joyful, giddy morning after.

Earlier I was trying to work just exactly which office block was Sony Music, when a girl walked out of the building with bell bottoms, a little embroidered top, a big guitar case with stickers and a far-away look. And ain't it sometimes just like the movies?

There's a great project in Cirencester (run by the diocese) where an empty House of Fraser has been taken over with spots given to small ethical businesses, a toy library, pay-what-you-can restaurant and so on - but also with rooms for community events or quiet contemplation. Works really well.

I was thrilled. It's still stuck in a box following a house move, but before that we'd look up places we were going to beforehand (escaped Mediaeval leopards and a lepers' well by my mum, for example). Looking forward to building some shelves and it being reachable again.
