Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Why does this matter? Because the editorial is saying a candidate does something effectively that he, in fact, does not actually do as a comptroller. This is why the editorial board should include and uplift writers who actually know how New York City government works.

I pointed out that the NYT editorial incorrectly says Brad Lander, as a comptroller, is a “manager” of the city budget He may be a watchdog, but he’s not a manager of the budget. The OMB and mayor are. Here’s how the Times responded and here’s what the comptroller’s duties actually are.

The New York Times now reports that Mayor Eric Adams' defense attorney is trying to get DOJ to drop the federal corruption case against Adams by suggesting Adams will only go along with Trump's plans for mass deportations if the case is dropped. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/29/u...

In pushing for the case to be dropped, Mr. Spiro has observed to department officials that Mr. Trump has criticized it, two of the people with knowledge said. The defense lawyer has also suggested that the mayor would not be inclined to cooperate with the president’s immigration crackdown if he remained under indictment, the people said.

Department officials in Washington are expected to meet with Manhattan prosecutors and, separately, with Mr. Adams’s team, as soon as this week.
