Best example I can think off the top of my head is something like Getting Over It where the simple but extremely frustrating gameplay of a dumb mechanic is what makes it such a great piece of art! It doesn’t need a story to make you feel the way you do, it’s baked into the gameplay design!

The other game that I can say has had a very messy relationship with competitive stuff is TF2 and how something like Meet your Match kinda messed up a lot of stuff for the sake of modernization and competitive but that's not something I'm 100% familiar with since I'm a filthy casual

I think the biggest thing with me for this is with Smash because I have some friends who play proper competitive and I love playing with them but I really heavily disagree with them when it comes to things like balancing or what the "right" way to play is.
