Scientists are testing whether zebrafish embryos can help create better cancer outcomes. Zebrafish are unique because they’re small, transparent, and inexpensive, making it easy to study how cancer reacts to different drugs. Compared to mice, zebrafish are more similar to humans than cell cultures.

In a world first, a teenager who suffered from daily seizures was fitted with a deep brain stimulation device in his skull as part of a UCL-sponsored clinical trial earlier this year. The device - first pioneered in animals - reduced the boy’s daytime seizures by 80%, making it the #2 story of 2024.
